My name is Chico Junior and I have a story to tell you about my daddy Chico, Sr. On a hot summer day, most of us were hanging out in the Garden relaxing, and being cooled by the water dripping down from the air conditioning units in the apartment building. It has been so noisy at night between the firecrackers, and the fireworks, that we are doing most of our sleeping and resting during the day. Chico came up from the basement, and announced that he had some chores to do in the building. He said that he needed to check in with the painter on the 4th floor, and with the plumber who was doing repairs on the sixth floor. So, with that Daddy left the garden, and went into the building. When Daddy was on the 6th floor with the plumbers, he overheard a conversation from the tenants coming home from the beach. They talked about a dog that they saw running around alone. When Chico returned to the Garden, he told us what he heard from the tenants in the building. Daddy also said that this was a hard time of year for all the animals, especially the dogs, because they are more frightened than we are from all the noise. We must go, and find this poor dog. Tommy, as usual, volunteered to go with Daddy. Mommy told Chico that he must be careful in his travels. Tommy, and Chico shook their heads and with that they left on their Journey. It was late in the afternoon so as they walked towards the boardwalk to the beach. People were leaving the beach, and the boardwalk to go home for dinner. Daddy acknowledged this, and said “we are going at a good time to find the dog because the dog would be less frightened without so many people around.” They were almost at the beach when Tommy spotted their friend Joel standing on the corner. Chico said, “I'm glad that you are here. Would you come, and help us find a dog on the loose.” Of course, Joel agreed to help. “This way,” Chico said, “one of us could look under the Boardwalk, on the Boardwalk and the beach at the same time.” Chico walked the boardwalk, and Joel went under it, while Tommy searched along the beach. Daddy was getting nervous because the time was passing, and perhaps the firecrackers would start up and the poor dog will crawl somewhere to hide where he could not be found. Then all of a sudden, Tommy came running toward the boardwalk, and alerted Chico and Joel that he had spotted the dog. Chico climbed down the stairs to the beach, and Joel appeared from under the boardwalk. Chico, and Joel followed Tommy towards the ocean, and there was the dog sitting by the rocks. Chico walked over to the dog, and told him not to be afraid, we have been looking for you in case you needed help. The dog said, “my name is Lucky. I was being walked with my family when a loud bang happened with the firecrackers. I started pulling, and broke loose from my harness and leash. I ran, and I ran and realized I was lost. I do not know how to find my home. Can you help me?” Chico told the dog not to worry, and said “you are wearing a collar, and it looks like you have some kind of tags on it.” Daddy told the dog to follow him, and the boys and that they would take him to safety. Chico walked side by side with Lucky. Tommy was in the front, and Joel behind them. It took a while, but they finally arrived back at the garden. Mommy was relieved to see them. On hot days especially, there was plenty of water around for us to drink. Chico showed Lucky to the water, and he drank wholeheartedly. Joel said he had to leave, and Daddy thanked him and said he would see him soon. Just then, the Rescuer came to the garden. She smiled when she saw Lucky with us. “Well, what do we have here” she said. The Rescuer looked at the collar, and noticed his tags. She told us that she was going to take Lucky upstairs to her apartment to feed him, and try to locate his family. She picked Lucky up, and he looked at us lovingly as he was carried away. Sometime later, the Rescuer came back to the Garden. She said that she had good news. Lucky did have his name, and phone number on one of his tags, and his family just picked him up to take him home. The Rescuer left us our dinner, and thanked us for taking care of the sweet dog and left. Daddy said to us that it is so important for people to have proper ID on their dog, and cat collars just in case they get lost. Daddy is always so wise. I will be back next month with another story.
