My name is Chico Jr., and I have a story to tell you about my Daddy Chico, Sr., the wisest cat in our family.
One beautiful day in the garden, most of us were relaxing on the grass, when the man with the water came by to give us fresh water. He put down the water, and left quite quickly. When Chico came up from the basement, Mommy told him that the man with the water was here, and that he looked very troubled. Aunt Anna added that he usually spends time with us. He didn't even talk to Junior. Chico was worried, and said that perhaps he wasn't feeling well. Just then, Tommy walked into the garden from the street. Daddy asked him where he was coming from. Tommy said that he followed the man with the water across the street, down through the cellar and out to the backyard. He said that he saw the man with the water spending time with a dog that was locked behind a gate that led to the street, which had a gate on it too and the dog was locked in between them. Chico asked Tommy what the dog looked like. Tommy said he was a big white dog with black spots. Daddy said that was the dog that he had heard about, that was walking around the neighborhood by himself. Too bad The Rescuer didn't find him first. Chico said we should go talk to the dog, so that we could find out his story. Mommy said it was getting dark, and she did not want Chico crossing the street. Daddy had trouble with his eyes, and now and then the rescuer would take him to the doctor. Chico said, “okay, Tommy and I will go in the morning.” The morning came, and Tommy and Chico crossed the street, went down through the cellar and out to the backyard to see the dog. The dog saw them walking to him, and his tail started wagging. Chico asked the dog why he was locked behind the gate. The dog explained that something had happened to his master, and he was put out in the street. This man found me, and he keeps me locked up outside here. Even in bad weather, he doesn't let me inside the basement. Chico said, “I heard that the man with the water comes by to see you.” The dog said, “yes he does and he is very kind to me.” Chico said, “we will try to help you. We have to go now, but we will come back soon.” Chico, and Tommy went back to the garden. Daddy told Mommy, and the others the situation with the dog. Mommy said, “you have to let the Rescuer know what is going on.” Chico said that he would wait for her to come by today. Sometime later, the Rescuer came to the garden. She noticed Chico waiting anxiously outside the garden for her to arrive. The Rescuer put down our lunch. Chico started walking, and the rescuer followed him. Daddy took her to the dog behind the gate. She said hello to the dog, and told Chico what she knew about this dog. She did not like how the dog was being treated, and told this to the new owner, who happened to be the Super of the building. She even asked the super to give her the dog, and he would not. The rescuer said that she, and other people had called the authorities on him. They came down to answer the complaint, and did not do anything about it. The Rescuer said goodbye to the dog, and told him that we would work on helping him. Daddy, and The Rescuer started back to the garden. On the way back, they passed the man with the water on his way to the dog. The Rescuer explained to us that LEGALLY she cannot do anything right now, but would not give up on it. She also told us that the dog was a Dalmatian, and that it is usually the kind of dog that is owned by the fire department. This was very interesting to me, and I could picture myself and the dog riding on a fire engine together. The next day, the man with the water came to see us. He said that he would not be back anymore, but knew that the Rescuer was taking care of us, and would give us fresh water every day. He said goodbye, and left. Daddy went with him. He was on his way to the Dalmatian. The two of them walked up to the dog. Chico noticed that the man had tools with him, and realized what he was going to do. Chico decided that he would help him, and be the lookout. The man took out cutters, and broke open the lock on the gate. He opened it up, and put the dog on a leash. He thanked Chico for helping him, and the dog. The dog looked happily at Chico as they left. Back at the Garden, daddy told us the exciting news and said that he was sure that the Rescuer will find out about the dog being taken away, and would be very relieved and glad for the dog. Chico told us that the dog, and the man with the water would start a happy life together. I was proud of my daddy for helping rescue the Dalmatian. I will be back next month with another story.
