WAGGIN TAILS                 MARCH 2023

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME BEGINS – 3/12/23
HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY
HAPPY PURIM

Dear Friends & Members:

I started this newsletter, as always, reviewing last year’s newsletter.  I talk about the weather, and it is a repeat of 2021-2022 into 2023, not good.  To help all the animals, we have to think of climate change.

I saw a poem, and picture on Facebook, which I will reprint here.  We talk about animals in shelters.  The lucky ones are in a No-Kill shelter.  They have the best chance.  Dogs, and cats, as well as farm animals are intelligent thinking beings.  They may not process what is going on in the same manner that we do, but they do understand being left out, and not wanted, whether in the shelter or in the street, wherever they may be.  They see people with pets, and the pets look loved.  In the shelter, people come in and look for the cutest dog or cat.  They pass over the ones that are truly beautiful inside.  I will reprint a poem, and picture that says it all.

We must have more spaying, and neutering.  Right now animals are born to die, because there are not enough homes.  Adopt a dog or cat from a shelter.  It will be the most loving family member.  See the attached poem, and picture.

REPRINTED FROM “WOOF FAMILY”
"They always seemed to pass me by,
I never knew the reason why.
All my friends had found a home,
And only I remained alone.
But finally, somebody came,
And spoke to me with a gentle tone.
I hardly dared believe it true,
Into my human's arms, I flew.
Our first embrace - my heart beat fast,
A family of my own at last!
And when tonight I rest my head,
In my new warm and cozy bed.
A prayer I'll send, high up above,
May all the shelter pups find love."

Thank you, to this great person for loving an animal, and seeing its beauty.  We should all learn from this.

California’s statewide ban on animal fur products officially takes effect
SACRAMENTO, California —On January 1, California’s ban on the sale and manufacturing of new animal fur products takes effect across the state. Assembly Bill 44, which passed in 2019, makes California the first state in the country to take this monumental step to end the fur trade within its borders. Assemblymember Laura Friedman, D-Glendale, championed the legislation, which was sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States and Animal Hope in Legislation. The bill gained enormous support from local, national and international animal protection organizations.
“The year 2023 marks a historic step forward for California with the implementation of a law that truly represents the values of our constituents,” said Assemblymember Friedman. “Californians do not want to see animals live and die in cruel ways for nothing more than fashion, and I’m so pleased that this law will help uphold our state’s animal welfare standards as well as potentially help drive innovation for more sustainable fashion alternatives.”
“We are grateful to California for taking a stand against the cruel fur industry by implementing this statewide ban on the production and sale of new fur products,” said Jenny Berg, California state director for the Humane Society of the United States. “The fact that around 100 million animals are still raised and killed in fur factory farms for nothing more than a fur coat, hat or other product is archaic, especially when humane, environmentally sustainable alternatives exist. We applaud California for leading the fight against fur and sending a powerful message that animals should no longer suffer and die for fashion.”
Before the bill’s passage, four municipalities in California—Los Angeles (2018), San Francisco (2018), Berkeley (2017) and West Hollywood (2013)—passed similar measures, paving the way for Assembly Bill 44. To date, 12 cities across the U.S.—including five in Massachusetts—have passed laws phasing out new fur sales, and in 2021, Israel became the first country to end fur sales.
According to 2017 Economic Census, U.S. retail sales of fur garments totaled just over $574 million, with most sales occurring in California at just under $129 million, followed by New York with almost $115 million. Together, California and New York made up nearly 43% of all fur sales in the country in 2017.
Several fur-free policies from fashion brands and retailers coincide with the bill’s effective date. Canada Goose, Kering, Saks Fifth Avenue, Zegna Group, Rudsak, Mytheresa and Moose Knuckles all pledged to go fur-free by the end of 2022. Neiman Marcus will eliminate fur products by March 2023.
Facts:
  • The law bans only the sale of new fur products and does not apply to the sale of used fur products sold at nonprofit thrift stores, secondhand stores and pawn shops. It does not apply to other animal products used for clothing such as leather or shearling.
  • The law does not impact ownership of fur products and it remains legal to wear fur.
  • The law applies to brick-and-mortar stores selling fur products in California as well as online sales of fur products into California.
  • The California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the California Attorney General’s office, and local law enforcement all share enforcement authority under the law. Californians can contact any of these offices with information about new fur being sold. First time penalties are $500, second time penalties are $750, and any further violations are $1,000.
  • Nearly 20 countries throughout Europe have already banned fur farming, and there is currently an effort by Humane Society International and other groups to gather signatures in support of a “Fur-Free Europe” European Citizens’ Initiative asking for a ban on fur farming and placing fur farmed products on the European marketplace. Although the petition has already gathered the necessary 1 million signatures needed by May 2023 for the European Commission to issue a formal response, it remains open to collect additional signatures and citizens of the European Union are encouraged to sign it here.

Animal advocates celebrate pro-animal gains in Montclair, NJ
As the year comes to an end, animal advocates celebrate the passage of three new animal protection ordinances and resolutions in Montclair.
Most notably, Montclair prohibited the retail sale of dogs and cats in pet stores. Montclair joins 136 municipalities in New Jersey that have enacted humane pet store laws, deciding that prohibiting pet stores from selling dogs and cats was the best solution to protecting consumers and stopping puppy mills. This ordinance is intended to prevent mill-raised dogs and cats from being sold in any existing or new pet stores in Montclair. Residents can continue to obtain pets from animal g shelters, rescues and responsible breeders.
Montclair also passed two resolutions in support of key animal protection legislation in New Jersey: R-22-204, which opposes the indiscriminate killing of wildlife via wildlife killing contests (supporting A502/S2409); and R-22-200, which opposes the intensive confinement of mother pigs and calves in gestation and veal crates (supporting A1970/S1298).
In wildlife killing contests, participants compete for cash and prizes for killing the most, the largest, or even the smallest coyotes, foxes, squirrels and other animals over one or two days. The Humane Society of the United States documented participants in a Barnegat, NJ killing contest, laughing and posing for photos in front of a string of foxes they had just killed. A502/S2409 would prohibit this cruel spectacle in the Garden State, as eight U.S. states—including Maryland, Massachusetts and Vermont—have already done.
The majority of mother pigs in the pork industry are confined to cages—known as gestation crates—that nearly immobilize them. Baby calves used for veal are often locked in similar cages, called veal crates. These crates are so small the animals can’t even turn around. A1970/S1298 would prohibit this inhumane caging in New Jersey.
“The lives of mother pigs, puppies, coyotes and other animals will be improved with the passage of these animal protection initiatives and Montclair’s support sends a valuable message throughout the state in this holiday season,” said Elissa Frank, New Jersey state director for the Humane Society of the United States. “We express our gratitude to sponsors Councilor Yacobellis and Councilor Schlager for their leadership in moving the humane agenda forward in Montclair.”
Councilor Peter Yacobellis said: “I'm elected by the people but I also like to think of myself as elected to represent our planet and its creatures. Montclair is a town that believes wholeheartedly in the humane treatment of all animals. I'm proud to have been leading a coalition in this town to restore native vegetation, make us an official Monarch USA city, cut back on the use of gas leaf blowers and much more. This is just the latest step in the right direction in terms of making sure our laws reflect our values and that our representatives in Trenton know that we expect them to enact these laws at the state level.”

LINDA’S LINE

          Hi.

It’s the Month of March, and I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our friends, and members a HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY, and a HAPPY PURIM.  With have had a few bouts of cold weather, but so far, no snow storms this year.  Although the cold weather makes it difficult for us, and especially for the strays, we have been lucky so far this year.  Hopefully, spring will arrive soon, bringing with it some nice warm weather.  This will be a welcome break for the strays, and for all of us.

Please be aware of the strays around your area, and if you see an animal that needs help, please see what you can do to help.  Don’t pass it by.  Remember to always carry pet food, and bottled water with you.  As Shirley mentioned in her story this month, kitten and puppy season is upon us.  So, if you see a mother cat with kittens, please give her some food and water, so that she will be able to nurse her kittens.  It is a matter of survival for them.  I know that we have said this before, but we must remember that we are their Guardians.  Also, if you come across a homeless person with a pet, please give them a blanket, and some food for themselves, and for their pet.  They we be very grateful for the help.

Remember that Daylight Savings Time begins on March 12th, so don’t forget to set your clocks ahead one hour the night before.

That’s all for now, but I’ll be back next month with another story.  Until then, G-d Bless you all, Stay well and Stay safe.

                                                Till next time.

CLOSING THOUGHT

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all our Irish friend, and the rest of you that become Irish just for the day.  A Happy Purim to our Jewish friends.

Daylight Savings Time will start again on March 12, 2023.  This is a good thing.  We will have more daylight to enjoy life.

This is the time of year that kitten, and puppy season starts.  Please be aware of the strays in your area.  When the mommy cat gives birth to her kittens, she will need more food and water to produce milk for the kittens.  Please, if you see a stray, please at the very least give it food and water.  You may be saving several lives.  If you can get the kittens to a shelter, they have a good chance of being adopted, but don’t take them away from the mamma, as they need her milk.

Just a note to say thank you to all our wonderful Adam, Eve and Sponsor-A-Stray members.

Remember, please try to enlist others to become members.  This keeps us here.  We always need funds for food.

As you know, Amazon Smile closed down last month.  I would like to thank those of you who participated in this program.

If you know or see a Rescuer feeding in your area, if you can, help with food.  She/he will do the rest.

Please Remember Our Troops

“We salute you for all you have done.
Your courage has kept us safe.
Your sacrifice has kept us free.
All of America owes you more than we can repay.
Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.
We are behind you all the way –
From the battlefield. . .to recovery!”

Have a wonderful, healthy and happy month, and April will be warmer.
