HAPPY PASSOVER HAPPY EASTER PREVENTION OF ANIMAL CRUELTY MONTH Dear Friends and Members: In the last newsletter, I mentioned that we were seeking a sanctuary for two feral cats that could not be returned to their colony. We were lucky to find a sanctuary in Florida, but the cats were in New York. Now comes the tricky part. We checked out land, and air transports, but that didn’t work. So Carol, the Director of Animal Welfare, and I decided that we would be the transporters. We had arranged for the holding home rescuer to bring the cats to her local veterinarian. Carol flew into New York from her home state, and went to the veterinarian to supervise preparation for the transport. We had to give the cats a sedative to relax them because at the airport, the cats have to be removed from their carriers so that the TSA can check to make sure that there is no contraband hidden in the carriers. When Carol saw that the cats were awake, but extremely relaxed in their carriers, she took car service to the airport where I was waiting for her – I had flown in from my home state so that I could help with this rescue. We each took a cat, and we went into Security in a private room for the cats to be checked. Thank G-d they were very relaxed, and we were able to get them safely back into their carriers. When on the plane, they were under the seats in front of us. It was a two seat row. The flight was three hours long, with good space between floor, and seat. When we arrived in Florida, we picked up our luggage, and had a car service waiting for us to take us to the sanctuary. First stop was their veterinary clinic. The sanctuary knew we would be late, and was kind enough to stay and wait for us. Without their kindness, it would have been impossible for us to do this. The cats have gone from living in a cold colony in Coney Island, to a warm, clean environment with other feral cats. The cats are supervised 24/7. They will be worked with to see if they can be gentle, so that they can be placed in a forever home. If not, they will live out their lives in this beautiful, caring sanctuary. This is how far we go to help the strays. We need funds to keep going. So please pass our newsletter around. We need corporate grants. We are not a large organization, but we managed to be around since 1968, when formed. Please be our advocate. Funds are much needed. P.S.:- Just before going to print, we found out that the 5 month old cat is responding well, and she will most likely turn in her feral “card” for a friendly placeable card. So she will find a forever home.

Hi!
First, I would like to wish all of our friends, and members a Happy Passover, and a Happy Easter. This is the month of April, and by the time you read this newsletter, spring will be in full swing (we hope). Unfortunately, we have just been through many winter storms, not much snow, but quite a bit of rain, which made it rough going for the strays. Hopefully, the warmer weather is just about upon us, and this is a welcome break for all of us! It has been a rough winter, for the strays and for us. A reminder, that this month is also Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, which should be celebrated all year long. So please be alert, and if you see an incidence of abuse toward an animal, please don’t ignore it. Remember that we are the guardians of the strays, and it is up to us to try to prevent animal abuse wherever, and whenever we can. On another note, I would like to tell you about a rescue that Save Our Strays, and I have been involved in this past month. It all started a week, and a half ago when a friend of mine told me about a male black, and white long-haired domestic cat, that was found by a neighbor of hers, who lived on the third floor in her building. The cat, who we named Lucky, was friendly, but very frightened, and had wandered into the building, when someone opened the door downstairs. The cat then wandered up to the third floor hallway. After speaking to her neighbor, my friend immediately went upstairs, and took the cat down to the hallway near her apartment on the first floor, so that she could take care of him. She placed a gate across the opening so that the cat could not wander around the building, and would remain safe. She then gave Lucky food, and water, and put down a towel for him to rest on. The cat was very sweet, and allowed her to pet him. He seemed very grateful for her help. My friend also told me that the cat had not be neutered. She also informed me that she, and her neighbor had put signs around the neighborhood, with the cat’s picture, and that she herself had also put his information on the media, to see if anyone would claim him. Since, there had been no response after a few days, I told her to bring the cat to my house, and that I would foster him until we could find a place for him. I then called Shirley, and apprised her of the situation. Shirley told me to take the cat to the veterinarian to have him checked, and given the necessary blood tests, and to have him neutered. She said that Save our Strays would take care of the veterinary bill, and that in the meantime, she would try to see if she could get him into a No-Kill shelter that she knows of on Long Island. My friend, and I took the cat to the veterinarian to be checked on Wednesday March 12th. Thankfully, the blood tests were negative, and the cat is healthy. The cat was neutered the following week, March 19th, and is now being cared for in my friend’s home until he is recovered, and we can find a place for him. Lucky is safe, and comfortable for now. Once again, thanks to our wonderful supporters, Save Our strays was able to help another animal in need. Till next time. Take care of yourself, and stay safe and well. We would like to wish both our Jewish, and Christian friends a Happy Passover, and a Happy Easter. This is a time of rebirth for all. Flowers are starting to bloom, and unfortunately, this is kitten season. So please be aware of the strays in your area.
It is a time to show friendship, and compassion to both our human friends, and our animal children. We are all G-d’s creations. It is time that we stand up for the innocent animals in this world. We have to make this planet a better place for man, and animal. We need more Adam, Eve and Sponsor-A-Stray members. Please pass our newsletter on to friends, family, and co-workers. We rely on you our friends, and members for our support. We receive no funding, other than from you. Enjoy your holiday, and always remember those less fortunate than you, the strays and the homeless, especially those with a pet family, and also those that are alone.
