WAGGIN TAILS                  MAY 2023
BE KIND TO ANIMALS WEEK – 5/7/23 TO 5/13/23
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY
MEMORIAL DAY

Dear Friends and Members:

Mother’s Day is here again.  The years fly by faster as you get older.  Kitten, and puppy season is here, and our rescuers do the best they can by picking up kittens and, mommies.  Our spay, and neuter program is doing well also.  The cats that are not friendly are placed back in their colonies after spaying, and neutering.  We hold females at least 10 days, and males 6 days to ensure that no infections or open sutures occur.  The ones that are friendly, if the Rescuers have room, will be held until a forever home is found.  We ensure that all animals that we care for are taken care of, and the Rescuers have eyes on them every day.

The animal situation in the Ukraine is not good.  They are looking for donations to buy food.  You can find reputable organizations on Facebook & Internet.

Please pass our newsletter around.  We need to increase our donations.  We need more Adam, Eve and Sponsor-A-Stray members.

I would like to wish a wonderful Mother’s Day, to anyone who considers themselves mothers.

 LEGISLATION                                                                                                          [REPRINTED]

Maryland’s legislative session shows continued commitment to animal welfare
ANNAPOLIS, Maryland (April 11, 2023) — As the 2023 legislative session rings to a close, animal advocates in Maryland will have a lot to celebrate. During this session the state became the first in the nation to make a dedicated investment in alternatives to animal research (SB560/HB626). Legislators also passed bills to reform the membership of Maryland’s Wildlife Advisory Commission to include biologists, wildlife protection advocates and outdoor recreationists, as well as hunters and farmers (SB320/HB188) and established core protections for pet-owners and their pets facing evictions (SB279/HB102).
“This year’s legislative session opened with an important question: would the new legislature and new governor continue the progress we saw in recent years advancing the humane agenda?” said Jennifer Bevan-Dangel, Maryland state director for the Humane Society of the United States. “As we approach the final hours of session, we can confidently say that the legislature and the new administration have demonstrated their commitment to fighting the big fights to end suffering for animals across Maryland.”
The legislature passed several additional reforms that will protect animals, including:
  • Protecting bears by updating the State’s Black Bear Damage Restitution Fund to become a proactive tool to fund conflict avoidance open to residents and towns as well as farmers (SB310/HB378).
  • Ensuring accountability for trappers by requiring that all traps are tagged with the license number for the trapper who set it (SB275/HB406).
  • Supporting animal shelters by allowing clinical staff to administer rabies vaccines to shelter animals and requiring an expedited process for reciprocity for out of state veterinarians (SB390/HB325).
  • Allocating $200,000 to the state’s lifesaving Spay/Neuter Fund
Advocates also noted the introduction this year of three key reforms that will remain the priority into 2024:
  • Ending the use of one of the cruelest confinement practices for farm animals, the confinement of egg-laying hens in cages so small they can’t spread their wings (SB690).
  • Prohibiting the use of animal testing where it isn’t required and ensuring stronger welfare standards until all testing has come to an end (SB495).
  • Advancing solutions to address the shortage of affordable housing that allows families dealing with housing insecurity to keep their pets (SB72/HB1039).
“We are grateful for the hard work of our sponsors and legislative leadership in advancing this suite of humane bills that will improve outcomes for companion animals, wildlife and animals in research,” noted Bevan-Dangel. “This session also saw the launch of critical animal welfare campaigns that we are excited to continue advancing in 2024.”

FYI                                                                                                                                                       [REPRINTED]

Just released: Gruesome undercover investigation at Illinois wildlife killing contest reveals more than 400 coyotes slaughtered for cash and bragging rights
The Humane Society of the United States urges Illinois Department of Natural Resources to ban the competitions
Springfield, ILLINOIS─Today, the Humane Society of the United States released the shocking results of a February 2023 undercover investigation at Nuggets Night Vision Coyote Hunt, a wildlife killing contest in Mendon, Illinois. The HSUS investigator attended the weigh-in event that followed the 45-hour killing period, during which roughly 86 participants gunned down at least 405 coyotes. At the weigh-in, participants gathered to compete for $15,000 in prize money and celebrate among piles of dead coyotes.
The investigator revealed that prizes were awarded to teams that killed the most, the heaviest and the smallest coyotes at just 17 pounds. The three-man team crowned champion for “most coyotes” slaughtered 49 coyotes, with second place bringing in 27 coyotes. The contest was organized by Nuggets Night Vision, a manufacturer of night vision and thermal optics devices often used in these contests.
The investigation shows that teams brought dead coyotes across state lines from Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and Wisconsin. At least one coyote from Kansas appeared to have had severe mange. The bodies were not checked for disease, and diseased animals were not disqualified from the contest. Mange is highly contagious and can easily spread to other wildlife, domestic dogs and people.
“Wildlife killing contests are an abomination and a disgrace,” said Marc Ayers, Illinois state director for the Humane Society of the United States. “Destroying coyotes for sadistic fun, games and cash does not reflect our state’s values. Illinois is among the 10 worst states when it comes to wildlife killing contests, with at least 28 competitions targeting coyotes, foxes, raccoons and crows taking place in the state in 2022. Responsible hunters denounce this horrific blood sport and 73% of Illinois voters support a ban on killing contests. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources must take a stand and make our state the first in the Midwest to ban this cruel, unnecessary treatment of coyotes who provide vital balance to our ecosystem.”
The investigator documented participants unloading bloody coyote bodies and hanging them upside down to weigh. A young child helped load the carcasses—at times struggling under the weight of the bodies of the animals—while other young children stood nearby and watched. Coyotes who were ripped apart by bullets were thrown into piles and laid out in rows to display so participants could revel in their win.
“Watching truck after truck backing into the weigh station, and coyote after coyote, dripping with blood, being weighed—it was like a factory assembly line,” said the undercover investigator for the Humane Society of the United States. “The stench of rotting flesh was so strong that people would step back when trucks with the bodies were opened. The ground was staining purple with blood and people—including children—were walking through it with total disregard for potential disease transfer."
On Dec. 22, 2022, veterinarians and 18 organizations, led by the Humane Society of the United States, submitted a petition to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources requesting that the agency prohibit wildlife killing contests. Eight states—Arizona, California, Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Mexico, Vermont and Washington—have already banned wildlife killing contests.

LINDA’S LINE

          Hi.

May - the month when the beauty of nature unfolds, as all the trees and flowers of spring begin to bloom.  This time of year, we also celebrate Mother’s Day to honor all the two-legged, and four-legged mothers of the world.  So, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of the mothers out there (both human, and animal) a HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY.

This Month we also celebrate Memorial Day, a time to honor all of the brave men and women who serve in our armed forces, both here and abroad.  To them we say, “we appreciate you, and thank you for all that you do for us.”  Please remember to keep them, and their families in your prayers.  We also remember all the brave service members, who gave their lives for our country.  Let us also remember the soldiers, and people of the Ukraine, and keep them in our prayers as well.

Now that spring is here, and the warmer weather is upon us, please be sure to remember to protect your pets from fleas, and ticks.  We have had plenty of rain this year. As a result, I am sure that there will be plenty of these little critters, and we don’t want our pets to be uncomfortable.  There are many good flea, and tick products on the market, but please be sure to ask your veterinarian, which of these is best, and safest for your pet.

Also, when walking your pet, please remember to keep them away from the fertilizers, and other white powders that homeowners use on lawns this time of year, as these things are dangerous to small animals, and can be dangerous to small pets as well.  It is normal for an animal to be curious and want to smell around when we are walking them, but they don’t always understand the danger – especially young dogs – so it is up to us, as their guardians, to protect them.

Please try to remember to carry a can of pet food, and some bottled water with you, in case you come across a stray that needs help, especially one that is pregnant.  If this does happen, offer it to them – please don’t pass them by.  Remember that this is kitten, and puppy season and animals that are pregnant need our help even more.  If you can pick them up, and bring them to a no-kill shelter, that would be perfect.

I know that we all love to grow things, especially flowers this time of year, but when you have pets, please be careful what type of plants that you buy as there are many that can
be toxic to animals.  If you wish to find out which plants are safe for pets, and which are not, you can contact the ASPCA to get a book from them, which contains a list of safe
plants, as well as a list of those that are dangerous.  You will find it very helpful, and informative.

Our thoughts, and prayers go out to their families of those that were lost during the pandemic.  Thank G-d we now have vaccines available to help keep us safe, and that according to the authorities, the worst is over.  Please be sure to have your Flu shots, and stay safe.

Have a wonderful spring, and G-d Bless you all.

Till next time.

CLOSING THOUGHT

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY to one, and all – mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, friends.  Mothers are the backbone of families (Dads can be also).  Enjoy your day.

If you see a four-legged mother-to-be or know that she had kittens, please try to help.  Kitten, and puppy season is here.  We have rescued many mothers-to-be, and mothers with new kittens.

Thank you to all our Adam, Eve and Sponsor-A-Stray members for all your constant support.  Receipts for your monthly support go out at the end of the year, unless you request an option that is different from what we usually do.

This month is Memorial Day, so our prayers for our troops, and the Ukrainian troops, mean even more.

Please Remember Our Troops

“We salute you for all you have done.
Your courage has kept us safe.
Your sacrifice has kept us free.
All of America owes you more than we can repay.
Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.
We are behind you all the way –
From the battlefield. . .to recovery!”

A MOTHER’S DAY POEM

You are a mother,
You are strong,
You are the guardian of our
lives.
We look to you for comfort
and care
You are always there.

We will follow your strength,
and become stronger in turn
We will help children
and animals
and all that need care
This Dear Mother, is
our thanks to you.
