WAGGIN TAILS NOVEMBER 2022
ELECTION DAY VETERAN’S DAY HAPPY THANKSGIVING DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ENDS 11/6/22 Dear Friends and Members: The Holiday Season is starting, and we wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving with family, and friends. ;/to many of our fellow citizens. Please keep them in your prayers. Animals were lost in the hurricane in Florida, but it is not on the news much. There are organizations that have gone out to help with these rescues. You can Google it on the internet. Anything you can do to help, is a plus. In the Ukraine, many animals need our help. The cold weather is here, and the strays go from hot to cold. Each season brings its own misery. Please, if you can, put up shelters with dry food, and water. The lucky ones are the ones that we take care of in our colonies. If you run into a stray, please feed it. At least it will give them another day of strength This is the time of year to open our hearts more than usual. Remember the homeless, who go out of their way to adopt a stray, and create a “family.” Please don’t pass them by. Give food for both the person, and the animal. A warm coat or blanket to keep both warm. They will truly appreciate any kindness. Sometimes I think there is too little of it. When you go to the polls to vote, check out who is kind to animals. They will be kind to us, and hopefully, do the right thing for both Humans and Animals. We must take care of each other, and our pets and the strays of the world. To those of you who responded to our plee for financial help, thank you. For those who are not in a position now to help, if things change for you for the better, please keep us in mind. The bottom line is let’s care about each other, and our environment. We must take care of each other, and our pets, strays and the animals of the world. Have a wonderful Holiday Season. Peace to everyone on the planet – Woman, Man and Animal. LEGISLATION [REPRINTED] San Diego Humane Society urges governor to sign bill limiting animal testing SB 879 would ban toxicological testing on dogs like the 108 beagles who arrived last week from a research breeding facility in Virginia SAN DIEGO—San Diego Humane Society and the Humane Society of the United States urge Gov. Gavin Newsom to sign Senate Bill 879 to end unnecessary toxicological testing on dogs and cats. SB 879, the Prohibiting Extraneous Testing (PET) Act, will ban needless toxicity testing on dogs, like the 108 beagles who arrived at San Diego Humane Society on Aug. 31, for products such as pesticides, chemical substances and food additives. The PET Act, authored by Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, will be the first of its kind in the nation. The bill was sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States—the organization responsible for removing approximately 4,000 beagles from Envigo RMS LLC’s breeding facility in Cumberland, Virginia, which supplied laboratories that test on animals. The Humane Society of the United States was approached by the U.S. Department of Justice to remove the beagles after a lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice in May detailed horrific violations of the Animal Welfare Act at the facility. One hundred and eight of those beagles were transported to San Diego Humane Society on Aug. 31 to get the second chances they deserve. The beagles were bred specifically for experimentation. Had they not been removed, most of them were headed for a life of suffering in laboratories where they may have been force-fed drugs, pesticides or other substances, and then observed for harmful effects such as heart failure, signs of cancer, or even death. Despite this suffering, testing on dogs does not ensure safety for humans. The process of testing on animals has scientific limitations that never will improve while non-animal methods are continually proving to be more accurate. “I’m proud to welcome 108 of these amazing beagles to California,” said Senator Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco. “Thank you, Humane Society of the United States, for your incredible work. These beagles are a perfect example of why we need to ban unnecessary testing on dogs and cats. Animals deserve to live long and healthy lives.” “Dogs who undergo toxicity testing suffer terribly and are kept in steel cages, often alone,” said San Diego Humane Society president and CEO Dr. Gary Weitzman. “Advances in technology are offering alternative methods that are more affordable, more predictive and clearly less harmful to animals. As more alternatives to animal testing are identified for all areas of research and we move closer to a time when no animals are used for toxicity testing, California can be a leader now by enacting SB 879.” “We applaud California for being the first state in the nation to prohibit certain testing on dogs and cats and we urge Governor Newsom to sign this historic bill into law,” says Jenny Berg, California state director for the Humane Society of the United States. “But there is more work to be done, including prohibiting testing of pharmaceuticals on dogs in the state. California has proven to be an extremely humane state by the bills we have passed. I know that we can be the first state to ban all testing on dogs and be a model for the rest of the nation in prioritizing science over suffering.” After arriving in San Diego on Aug. 31, all 108 beagles were transported to San Diego Humane Society’s El Cajon Campus, where they were medically evaluated and vaccinated. Since then, the organization has placed approximately 50 of the beagles with local rescue partners. The other beagles will remain with San Diego Humane Society, where they are in foster homes until they can be spayed or neutered and made available for adoption. Members of the community can learn more about the beagles, or make a donation to SDHS, at sdhumane.org/beagles. FYI [REPRINTED] The Humane Society of the United States helps hundreds of animals recover from Hurricane Ian FORT MYERS, Fla.—The Humane Society of the United States is on the ground helping animals and communities impacted by the deadly Hurricane Ian. Responders from the HSUS deployed to Charlotte County, Florida, to assist with rescue calls and community outreach in the days following the storm. Additionally, the HSUS is facilitating the transport of animals who were available for adoption in various Florida shelters prior to the hurricane. Moving animals awaiting adoption out of the region gives those animals a second chance at finding adoptive homes and also increases the capacity of impacted communities to care for the influx of displaced animals following the storm, increasing their likelihood of being reunited with their families. Florida authorities requested that the HSUS provide this support. Some of the lifesaving efforts the HSUS is facilitating include:
The HSUS is still working on transporting animals out of communities impacted by Hurricane Ian. LINDA’S LINE Hi. November has arrived, and we are in the midst of the fall season. It is hard to believe that the year has gone by so quickly. This month we also celebrate Thanksgiving – a time for families to be together, and to show thankfulness for all the blessings that G-d has given us in our lives, especially our families, friends and our wonderful pets. Hopefully, since the worst of the COVID situation is behind us, people will be ale to spend Thanksgiving with their families this year. For those of you who will be traveling to family for the holiday this year, please remember to continue to be careful, so that you can enjoy the holidays celebration with family and friends. Let us also not forget that the past few years have been difficult, what with the pandemic and all, and we should remember to give thanks for those of us, and our families and pets, who have come through this unscathed. Please remember to include our troops, and their families in your prayers, as well as the people in the Ukraine, this Thanksgiving as well. A reminder that Daylight Savings Time ends on November 6th, so don’t forget to set your clocks back an hour the night before. Before long the cold weather will be upon us, and we do not know what kind of a winter we may be facing this year, so please be sure that your shelters are in place for the strays, and be sure to put out food (preferably dry, as moist food tends to freeze in the cold weather), and water for them as well. The more food they eat, the thicker their fur will be – this is especially true of cats. This will give them some protection, at least, from the weather. Also, there have been stories on the news about people who have been going around stealing certain dog breeds from their owners, and selling them to other people. Please be alert when walking your pet. It would be a good idea to have your pet microchipped, so that if G-d forbid the animal does get lost, there is hope that it can be found and returned to you. I know how much pets mean their owners. Mine mean the world to me, and I wouldn’t want this to happen to me or anyone else. On another note, please remember to have dog sweaters, and coats on hand to keep your pets warm when walking them in the cold weather. Contrary to what some pet owner’s may believe, an animal’s fur is not enough to keep them warm in the cold weather. Believe it or not, they can, and do catch cold the same as we do. Also, please remember when walking your dogs during the cold months, please watch out for the rock salt that homeowners put down on the sidewalks to melt the snow, and ice. Try to make sure that your pet does not walk on it as it can cause an irritation on their paws that can be uncomfortable, and difficult to get rid of. We here at Save Our Strays wish all of our friends, members and their families a HAPPY, HEALTHY THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY, and a salute to our veterans. G-d Bless, and stay safe. Till next time. CLOSING THOUGHT We need more Adam, Eve and Sponsor-A-Stray members. An extra donation, when you can, is appreciated. We watch our pennies, and spend with thought. Incoming funds are light. Life is short, even if you live to 101. Let’s all leave a good mark on this earth as we pass through. All life is important. As we all get older, we learn to appreciate life. Let’s work together while we still can. Things have to change, for the better. Climate change will help man and animal. Help an animal one by one – do not look away. It is a child, like our children. It thinks, feels pain, cries and feels what we feel. It walks the streets alone, hungry and frightened. If you believe in reincarnation, this could be you next time. Save Our Strays maintains a hotline (718-332-3956) Monday – Friday from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, and an answering machine for all other times to take messages – all messages are returned. This is to address our member’s concerns, and needs and for animal emergencies. We invite like-minded individuals to join with us to become members, to help us in helping the animals. Individuals may even wish to include us in a charitable donation in their wills. Please help us spread the word about Save Our Strays, and the things that we do. As we have said before, if you have a bulletin board in your place of worship or business, please let people know what we do, we need funds to continue. Remember, we have a website: saveourstraysbrooklyn.com. We are always changing the pictures of the animals that we help. See what we do. Please Remember Our Troops “We salute you for all you have done. Your courage has kept us safe. Your sacrifice has kept us free. All of America owes you more than we can repay.
