Hello again.
Can you believe January is here again? I would like to start off this month by wishing all of our friends, and members a Happy, and Healthy New Year. Winter is now in full swing, and as Linda said in her column, I hope that everyone has their shelters up and ready for the strays, to keep them protected from the elements. Please remember to stock them with dry food (wet food tends to freeze in this weather), and water. We have had snow already. On another note, I would like to tell you about some of the rescues that I have been involved in lately. COOKIE – Under the highway before the hospital, to the right on a hill behind a fence, I spotted two young cats, about 5 months old. I was able to get one of them, a female, who I named Cookie, that came through the fence and went right into the trap, but the other one ran off. I took Cookie to one of our veterinarians to be checked out, given shots, built up and spayed. Cookie was happy to be rescued. She was like a little baby wanting to be taken care of. I went back, and tried to get the other kitten, but could not find her. I looked for the mother, and finally did get her after many tries. Cookie was socialized, sweet and was ready for adoption. Fortunately, she was adopted the next day. The woman who adopted her worked from home, and it was a perfect situation. Cookie stayed by her feet, and the woman scooped her right up. Cookie now lives in Brooklyn, and is doing very well. JACKIE AND JOEY – While driving through Brighton, I saw two kittens, one dark grey, and one black. I was able to trap them immediately, as they were hungry and went right into the traps. I brought them to a woman that I have worked with before, who thank G-d, has been adopting out, socializing and working with felines for some time now. She can get homes for them online. This is all that she does. She cleans them up, works with them and when they are ready, screens the future adoptees. Jackie, and Joey were two female siblings. After realizing that we were trying to help them, they came to trust us. When they were ready, a nice middle-aged couple came to see Jackie and Joey. They liked the idea of adopting two kittens, which made me happy. They were a nice middle-class couple. The felines took to them immediately, so off they went to their, hopefully, forever home. It has been three weeks, and so far so good. Everyone is happy. MIDNIGHT – I received a phone call from a very nice young man, who said that he had a four- month-old kitten, who he named Moishe, that he had adopted from a shelter (which I love to hear) and he wanted a companion for him that looked exactly like Moishe. He came, and brought Moishe, who obviously was a male and he wanted a female that looked just like him. It did not matter because Moishe was neutered, and Midnight was spayed. After checking each other out, they seemed to take a liking to each other. Midnight met her companion. All was good, because in another few days, I found good homes for four more lucky cats. Adopters know that they can call at any time. I had a good feeling because this young man was so warm, and loving it was a pleasure. So many more situations. Thank you, Save Our Strays for your help.
