Hello again.
January – a new year. As you get older, time flies faster. I would like to start off this month by wishing all of our friends, and members a Happy, and Healthy New Year. Winter is now in full swing, and I hope that everyone has their shelters up, and working for the strays, to keep them protected from the elements. Please remember to stock them with dry food, and water. On another note, I would like to tell you about some of the rescues that I have been involved in lately: GRACE – One day, I was on my way home, and much to my surprise, I saw a cute little kitten, about 4½ weeks old, run out from under a car. I pulled into a parking lot, took out one of my traps and some food. All of a sudden, another feline ran out and they both went into the trap together. It was a mother, and daughter. When I went over to the trap to close it, it wouldn’t close – so upsetting. I realized, at that point, that finding a place for the two females together was going to be difficult. I called an animal person that I know, who is wonderful with fostering and sometimes finding good homes for the animals. It is so much more difficult to trap in the cold weather. Well, we got the baby, Grace (the daughter) and she is being socialized, and when she is ready she will be adopted. The mama is feral, and was put back by the church where she is being fed. We had her spayed, and she was held for 10 before she was released. Thank G-d we got them. BEATRICE – Beatrice appeared at one of my feeding spots from out of nowhere, but there she was a real long-haired domestic cat, about 8 months old and very pretty. She was also very friendly, and I could not leave her there because she wanted a home. So, of course, I called another friend of mine, who helps me to find homes for adoptable cats and also holds them. The first thing that we did was bring her to a veterinarian to be checked out, given shots, spayed, de-flead and de-wormed. Beatrice was so happy to be rescued. We do not know how long she was out on the street. Anyway, a nice family with one teenager fell in love with Beatrice, and her loveable ways. Off she went to live on Long Island. After checking on her, we found out that she became acclimated to her new home in about a week, and is loving it. She has been spayed, and given all her shots. Sometimes we do have nice endings. Thank G-d – it gives me faith. MIGUEL – Lately, I have been finding more older cats, under a year, on the street. I do not know where they were when they were kittens, one of them in particular, who I named Miguel, is a character. It seems that he walked into a Bodega, and would not leave. I walked into the Bodega, and the owners told me that they did not know what to do with him. He was exceptionally sociable. They said that they would keep him if I would have him neutered, cleaned up and given shots. Of course, I said yes. It is too hard to find homes now, and adoptions are kind of low. Anyway, Miguel has become the host of the Bodega, and seems to understand Spanish. So, he is bilingual, which is really cute, and smart also. I check once in a while to make sure everything is okay with Miguel, and he is in a happy place. Thanks to Save Our Strays, all veterinary bills have been paid.
