Happy Valentine’s Day to all of our readers. Remember that this is the month of Love, so let’s all make it a priority to be kind to each other, and those less fortunate than we are.
On another note, I would like to tell you about some rescues that I have been involved in lately. GIGI – One day while I was on my morning feeding rounds, I stopped at a grocery store to get a cup of coffee. While I was there, I spotted a grey female cat, that appeared to be about 6 months old. She had semi-long hair, and was quite attractive, but she was rather thin and it looked like she had given birth, maybe 5 or 6 weeks prior to that day. I looked around, and saw no food, no water, no litter box – “nothing.” I became agitated, and went to speak to the owner of the store, to try to educate him about how to properly care for a pet. I told him that Gigi needed to be spayed, and that Save Our Strays would take care of it. After a bit of persuasion, he finally agreed. I called a rescuer friend of mine for help, and to ask if she would foster Gigi, until she was ready to go back. I then went to speak to the owner of the store, to find out if he really wanted the cat, and told him that if he didn’t want Gigi, I would find her a home. He told me that a neighbor had recently given Gigi to him, and he didn’t really want her. He allowed me to keep Gigi, and she now has a nice, loving home with my friend’s neighbor. KILLER JOE – A full grown, male, orange Tabby cat appeared at one of my feeding spots one day, and it looked like he was definitely unneutered. I knew that he had to be trapped, and taken care of. I managed to get him, but it wasn’t easy. I than brought him to one of our veterinarians to be neutered, checked out, given shots, deflead etc. When we went to pick him up, the staff at the veterinarian’s office said that the name Killer Joe was perfect for him. When Killer was ready, I brought him back to the spot where I found him, where he would have food and shelter – the best I could do. He adjusted well, and was happy just to have a place to call his own and to have the security of food. Killer Joe stays there, and seems happy and secure. MARIO – A friend of mine had recently moved to a new apartment. One day, about a block down from her new apartment, she saw an older male Tiger cat, with a clipped ear. He was standing in front of a door, just waiting. My friend called, and I immediately drove over to see what I could do. When I got there, we both went to the door where the cat was waiting, and rang the bell. The woman who lives there said that the cat comes there from time to time, and when she sees him, she feeds him. You cannot feed a cat occasionally, so my friend and I got him and brought him to the veterinarian, and then afterwards she took him home. Well, Mario was miserable. He wouldn’t eat, and jumped on all the windows and blinds. He wanted out. We realized that he was unhappy, and went and explained the situation to the woman down the block, and she promised to have food ready for him all the time. We brought her an insulated shelter for the cat. We then went back to my friend’s house, and when we opened the window of her first-floor apartment, Mario ran straight to the woman’s house, and he is so happy now thank G-d. She just had to be educated.
