Hello Again,
I would like to start off this month by wishing all of our readers a Happy St. Patrick's Day. Remember that Daylight Savings begins on March 8th, so don't forget to fix your clocks. Now I would like to tell you about some of the rescues that I have been involved in recently. Sergey - A lot of construction is going on all over Coney Island, and this is disrupting the lives of not only the cats, but raccoons and Possums as well. It is horrible that people are scared of them. They abuse them not realizing that we have taken their land. While I was on my route I saw a long-haired red cat that looked totally bewildered. I showed Sergey, as I named him, a plate of food and got him to follow me a few feet to my feeding spot. What is nice about this spot is that it is in a not so nice area, but none of the cats bother one another. Sergey looks content so he is safe. I got him in a trap the next day, and took him to the veterinarian to be checked out, and neutered. The doctor said that he was okay, and Sergey stayed at the veterinarian's office until he was ready to be put back in my colony. The the was ready, I brought him back to the colony, and he has been there ever since. I would have liked to get him a home, but sometimes when they are older it is difficult. Meanwhile, he is safe. Whitey - For a while now, every day I have been seeing this terrified, but handsome well-rounded male cat hiding behind one of the houses that I feed in front of. If I just looked at him, or even glanced in this direction, he would run. So I would just drop the food and leave. Then I started having rouble with new neighbors that just moved in. They did not want the food around. It is very difficult when you are dealing with felines that are abandoned. they stay in one spot, and are reluctant to move. Anyway, thank G-d a few houses away, I put a plastic container with food on the property, where I got permission. All of a sudden one day two cats appeared there, then four cats and finally the white one, Whitey. I had five or six cats that stayed on this property, and I knew that they had food and shelter in back of the house, and were safe for now. I must check to see if two new ones are spayed and take them to the veterinarian to be checked out. Save Our Strays will pay the bill. Sandy - Sandy is a 3 1/2 month old female light-colored Tiger cat. I have a pretty good idea where she came from. Her mother is an older cat who runs every time she sees a trap. She is a problem. So far nothing I do seems to work, but then one morning I saw Sandy by herself, and put down the kitten trap and managed to get her. The poor things was so panicked so I covered her to clam her and spoke softly to her. I brought her to the veterinarian to be defleaed and checked out and to find a home to socialize her first. It was difficult but after six weeks it worked. The blood tests came back negative, and she was also dewormed. Just what I need, another cat in a cage in my bedroom. I worked with Sandy, and as she settled in, she started to come around. One of my co-workers told me that they knew someone who wanted a kitten. We delivered Sandy to a nice home. She was frightened at first, but eventually she felt loved and secure. The new owners will spay her soon and Sandy now has a loving home.
