Hello Again,
April is here, and, spring is upon us. It has been a hard winter. I am glad that it is gone, and I am sure that the strays agree. We can finally enjoy better weather. I would like to wish all our friends, and members a HAPPY PASSOVER, and a HAPPY EASTER. Also, a reminder that this month is Prevention of Cruelty To Animals Month. So, as I have said before, if you see an animal that looks as though it has been mistreated, don’t ignore it, do something about it. Both you, and the animal (or animals) in question will be glad that you did. Now on another note, I would like to tell you about some of the rescues Save Our Strays, and I have been involved in lately. NICKY & JERRY It just never ends. I went to a different supermarket than I usually go to, and on the side of the parking lot, I noticed a cardboard box. One thing that I always do is to check cardboard boxes, especially if they are closed. Anyway, as I opened it slowly, two little heads looked up at me – two male orange kittens, about 3 months old. Knowing that no one was taking animals in right now, I decided to call an acquaintance of mine, who has a veterinarian that sometimes takes kittens, and puts them up for adoption, for a fee. She came with me to her veterinarian, and we explained the situation. Thank G-d, he was compassionate and realized how overwhelmed everyone is with the pandemic. Nicky, and Jerry – probably brothers – were going to be together, and safe. They seemed healthy. I have so many other situations with kittens that are not socialized, and need to be worked with. So, there are two less that I have to worry about, so now I can go on to the next situation. MAMA Mama is a cat that we have been feeding for six years. She is an aggressive Tiger cat, whom I tried to socialize. She does not get along with other cats. I was finally able to trap her, using a drop trap, which was an ordeal in itself. We then got her to a veterinarian, where she was spayed, given shots and everything else that was necessary. Mama still did not get along with other cats, and wanted to be outside by the house, with her own shelter and food, but then the landlord decided that he wanted to use the walk-in apartment of the house, and would not let us continue to feed her at all on his property. We became concerned because we did not see her for a few days. Finally, we found a neighbor, who we spoke to, and managed to get her to allow us to leave a dish with food on the other side of the fence, as long as we were neat. We waited, and finally Mama appeared and we got her to climb over the fence, where her food was waiting for her. So far, so good. Mama is happy now. Some people are just cruel, while others do try to help. PRECIOUS About a year ago, while feeding, I noticed a small, all black cat that was in really bad shape. Her stomach was swollen from worms, and obviously, she had never been to a veterinarian. Someone on the block told me that the cat had 2 kittens, and then showed me the house where the people who owned her lived. I spoke to the cat’s owners, and was furious with how neglectful and uncooperative they were. It is just ignorance. I told them that the mama, Precious, and the kittens were in very bad shape and would die if not taken care of properly. They finally agreed, and I took them all, built them up, had them spayed and then kept them almost a month. After that, I found out that the owners wanted the kittens, and mama back. So, I spoke to the owners and educated them about how to care for these animals properly, and they seemed to understand. Well, almost a year later, I received a phone call from them saying that the mother does not want the mama cat – Precious, that they are keeping the 2 kittens. I was mortified, went to pick up the mama cat, and now Precious is part of my household. I pray that my other cats accept her. So far she is okay, and has good food and toys. All medical is always paid by Save Our Strays. Without them, I could not help the many strays that I come in contact with.
