Hello Again,

May is here, and spring is in full bloom.  Mother nature is showing all her beautiful colors, and thank G-d, the nice weather is finally here.  This is a welcome break for us, and for the strays.  A reminder that this month, we also celebrate Be Kind To Animals week, from May 2nd through May 8th.  So, remember if you see an animal that needs a helping hand, whether it be food, water or helping to find it a new home, please try to help wherever and whenever you can.  Both you, and the animal (or animals) in question will be glad that you did, and let us extend Be Kind To Animals all through the year.

Now on another note, I would like to tell you about some of the rescues Save Our Strays, and I have been involved in lately.

COCOA –
Not too long ago, we adopted out a 2 or 3 year old cat that I had found.  She was friendly, and even though she was a little older, I was able to find a couple who had a 10 year old child, figuring that this would be a good home for her.  We drove to Queens, and brought Cocoa to what we thought was a good home.  After that, we started getting complaints from them saying that the cat would attack their son’s feet.  At first, I thought it wasn’t anything to worry about, but then the couple said that they did not want Cocoa anymore.  Since Cocoa was good to everyone, but the 10 year old boy I thought to myself, this child is probably playing too rough with the cat.  We went to pick up Cocoa.  My friend, who already has six cats, took Cocoa into her home and put him in a cage so that he could get use to his new surroundings.  Cocoa is now a part of my friend’s family, and is happy in her forever home.  The family that returned Cocoa asked me for another cat, but obviously there was no way I would give it to them, since their son may not like animals, and this is why Cocoa and he did not get along.  It is very important to check out homes with children, before adopting out an animal to them.  In this case, the boy might have been jealous of Cocoa, and the cat knew it.

CHARLIE –
Most of my colonies are pretty cool.  The felines stay to themselves or have their special friends, but now and then there is always a bully that comes along.  At one of my bigger spots, a new cat appeared from nowhere, and would just look at my original felines who live at the spot, and they would back away.  Charlie appeared to be really aggressive, and I must have peace at my colonies – they have enough to deal with.  I trapped Charlie hoping that once he was neutered, he would calm down.  My friend, who is also an animal person, and I took Charlie
to the veterinarian to be fixed, given shots and everything else that was necessary (thank you Save Our Strays) and then she agreed to hold him for me, as she fosters for me from time to time.  I thought that when Charlie was ready, he would be put back in my spot, but not long after that, my friend called me and told me that Charlie must have been owned by someone because he is the sweetest, most loving cat and that even though he is over a year old, he will be put up for adoption.  Well, sure enough Charlie found a great home with a single man, and he now has a forever home.

OPAL –
I found a little 4 month old kitten, all black and even a little scary looking, with a huge thing growing out of her ear.  It was horrible, like a big tumor.  I rushed the cat, which I thought was a girl, but turned out to be a boy we named Opal, to the veterinarian.  Opal had to have immediate surgery, and was given shots, neutered and everything else that needed to be done.  I waited two weeks for Opal to heal, and then brought him back to the veterinarian for a checkup.  He needed more antibiotics, and ear drops for another two weeks, and then Opal will be put up for adoption.  Thanks to Save Our Strays, all this was able to be done.  Opal has a few prospects, and we will pick the best one shortly.  Save Our Strays is always there, and thanks to your donations, another helpless animal has been helped.  Thank you.
