Hello again.
It’s the month of August, and I hope that you are all enjoying your summer, and staying safe. Please remember to try to keep an eye out for the strays, and help them with dry food, and water wherever and whenever you can. On another note, I would like to tell you about some of the rescues that I have been involved in lately. MICKEY – One day Mickey just appeared, out of nowhere, at one of my better feeding spots. All of a sudden, I am finding all these unfixed cats that have been deliberately left in my spots. I have no idea where they are coming from, so the best I can do is to take them to the veterinarian to be fixed, given shots, defleaed and checked out. What hurts me is that some are friendly, and want a home, but you can’t always find one. So, those cats wind up being put back in my colony. The colony is safe, and there is food and shelter, but they are missing love. Mickey is about 2 months old, and I am trying to get him a home, but meanwhile, he is safe and his belly full. ROSA'S BABIES – If you recall, in one of my stories in a previous newsletter, I told you about a mother cat that I had found, with her kittens. Well, an acquaintance of mine fostered her, and her kittens until they were old enough to be adopted. We then took them to a veterinarian to be checked out (Save Our Strays paid the bill), and they were ready for adoption. We put their information on the internet, because most shelters are closed or are only taking emergencies. Well, we managed to get three of the kittens a home together (thank G-d) together. Two of them looked like twins, Jack and Joe - two identical Tiger cats, and the third was a Calico female. The woman who took them, adopted all of them because she saw how close they were. When they are of age, we will check to make sure that they have all been fixed. We always check to make sure – I do not take a person’s word. Meanwhile, I have to find a home for one more sibling, and hopefully, the mama. In the meantime, Jack and Joe, and their sister are doing great – I’ve got my eye on them. MELANIE – Melanie is a 2 year old, un-spayed cat who just appeared down the block from one of my feeding spots. I got some food for her, and tried to call her over, but she was terribly frightened, and had obviously been abandoned. I left food for her, and walked away. She was a Tiger cat, nothing unusual, but in her eyes she was lost. I walked away, and watched her eat. The next day, I went back looking for Melanie, and saw her about half a block away. I set a trap. Melanie was hesitant, but eventually went in. Once in the trap, she was frightened. She did not hiss or try to attack, she was just confused. I called an acquaintance of mine, who is also an animal person, so that we could get her checked by a veterinarian, and have her spayed. My acquaintance said that she would work with her, and find her a home. Melanie would not have made it in the streets. After three weeks, Melanie found a home with a nice older woman, who wanted a calm, quiet cat. Melanie is now living in Brighton, looking out the window at the beach, and is happy.
