ROBBIN’S NEST
Hello again. It’s hard to believe that the summer is over, and it’s September already. Please remember to keep an eye out for the strays in your area, and to start setting up shelters for the strays, as the cooler weather is right around the corner. On another note, I would like to tell you about some of the rescues that we have been involved in lately. RICKI – One day, while I was feeding at one of my spots, I spotted a brand new Tabby kitten, about 3 months old all by herself. I assumed that someone had dumped her there. I ran back to my car, and got a carrier. At first, she would not go into the carrier, so I called a rescuer friend of mine and asked her to come immediately. She came right away, and together we were able to get the kitten into the carrier. The next day, I took Ricki to one of our veterinarians to be checked, etc. The doctor said that she was okay, except for an eye infection, for which she was given treatment. Ricki, was terrified and had to be socialized, but she came around very quickly. Before you know it, she was playing and acting like a normal, healthy kitten. Two weeks later, while I was feeding at one of my spots, a man that I know told me that his cat had died recently, and he wanted another kitten. I sent him pictures of some kittens that I had, and he and his wife picked Ricki. When Ricki was ready, we gave her to the man and his wife, and Ricki now has a wonderful, loving home. When she is old enough, she will be spayed. Meanwhile, I keep in touch with them, and Ricki is doing fine. MOMMA & HER 5 BABIES – While driving by one of the projects in Coney Island, I spotted a momma cat, and her 5 kittens. They looked very raggedy. I stopped, and immediately put out food for them. I went back the next day, and they were there waiting to be fed again. So, my rescuer friend and I set up a trap, and got 3 of the kittens and the momma, but it took a another day, and a half to get the other 2 kittens. We took them all to one of our veterinarians to be checked, etc. The kittens, except for one of them, and the momma are all feral. We kept the one kitten that is not feral to try to find a home for it, and we built up all the other cats nutritionally, and when they were all ready we had them spayed and neutered. After they were healed, we put them back in the same spot where they will be safe, and comfortable. I will continue to feed them there. SUNNY – I was driving, and in the middle of the block I spotted a ginger, and white male cat. He did not look well, so I stopped my car. He let me pick him up, and I put him right into a carrier. I took him to one of our participating veterinarians right away. The poor cat turned out to have a blockage in his urinary tract, and was in very bad shape. He stayed overnight in the hospital, and then my rescuer friend took care of him. He had to been taken to the veterinarian periodically to be checked, but he is now doing well and he is being fostered by my friend where he is safe, because he is a sweet, friendly cat. He will stay there until we find a home for him, and he will never be in the street again. His personality helped save his life.

ROBBIN’S NEST
Hello again. It’s the month of August, and I hope that you are all enjoying your summer, and staying safe. Please remember to try to keep an eye out for the strays, and help them with dry food and water whenever and wherever you can. On another note, I would like to tell you about some of the rescues that I have been involved in lately. MARIA & HER 5 KITTENS – I was driving in Coney Island, on my feeding rounds. I had to stopped for few minutes as there was an ambulance in front of me. While I was waiting, I looked around and spotted about four different cats hiding under the construction site by the projects. They looked skinny, and three of them were females. I jumped out of my car, and went to feed them, and to check out the situation. I have been feeding them every day since then. I called my rescuer friend, and she came to help me, and we managed to get one of the females. After that, we realized that she had kittens. We looked around the construction site, and found 4 of the kittens, which were no more than weeks old. As we were leaving, we saw another kitten hiding in a hole in the building. We were there all night trying to catch this kitten, but thank G-d, the next morning we finally got him. The kittens were taken to one of our veterinarians to be checked out, and they were found to be healthy, and they will be put up for adoption. The mother was vet checked, spayed etc., and when she was ready, she was returned to my new feeding spot where she will be comfortable (she was not friendly). I will keep you up to date on my progress in getting the other two adult females. SARA – One day, while I was feeding at one of my spots, someone came over to me to tell me that there were some cats behind a car repair place, which was nearby. We had been working for a while in that area trapping cats, getting them vet checked etc., and putting them back, which is called spay and release, but there were more. We still had not gotten the one that I named Sara. The next day, I went to the repair place before they opened with another rescuer, and we managed to get Sara, and took her to one of our veterinarians to be checked, spayed etc. While we there the feeder who takes care of them came, and told us another mother cat with 2 kittens showed up there. So, now we have to try to get these cats as well. I will keep you updated on my progress in getting this new little family. ZOEY & MIDNIGHT – Save our Strays received a phone call from a woman in East New York, who said that there were 2 very young kittens in her back yard that the mother cat was not feeding. My rescuer friend went to the check out the situation, and got the kittens. The kittens were taken to one of our veterinarians, and were treated for an Upper Respiratory Infection. My rescuer friend is fostering them, giving them KMR and medication, and will care for them until they are well. So far, the kittens are doing fine and when they are ready they will go up for adoption. We will eventually get the mother, and have her vet checked and spayed, but we must first make sure that she has no other kittens, that we haven’t found yet. |
