Hello again.
I would like to begin by wishing all of our friends, and members a HAPPY COLUMBUS DAY. October, and the cooler weather will be here before long. I know that I have said this before, but please remember that now is also the time to start setting up our shelters for the strays to prepare for the cooler months ahead. We are also celebrating Halloween this month, so please remember to keep an eye out for the strays in your area, and your own pets as well. Please watch out for black cats especially, as they are targeted this time of year. As I always say, “we must remember that we are their guardians.” On another note, I would like to tell you about more of the rescues that we have been involved in lately. HOPE – I received a phone call from someone, telling me that they heard a cat crying in their neighborhood for two days. I went there with a friend to investigate, and we found that there was a black female cat sitting on top of a restaurant freezer crying. At first, we thought that she had kittens. There was also barbed wire near her, and since it was night time, we had to wait until morning to get her, because we needed to come back with a ladder so that we could reach her. The next morning, we went back, and climbed up the ladder to get her. We didn’t know whether or not she was feral, but we did know that she was in distress. Well, she was skin and bones, and extremely sweet. We took her to a veterinarian immediately, and the doctor said that she weighed five pounds, extremely malnourished and was sweet as sugar. A few months prior to this, a man from the place where I work took in a black cat named Sabrina, that had been given up by her previous owner, and was also sweet and neglected. I told the man about Hope, and he said that he wanted another cat and would take her, but I told him that Hope had to be built up before she could be spayed. The man agreed. Well, to our surprise Sabrina and Hope immediately fell in love with each other. They even use the litterbox together. It is just beautiful, and in another month or so, Hope will get spayed. She is eating very well, and putting on weight. What could have been a tragic situation, turned out to be wonderful for Hope – her suffering is over. JASPER – A month ago, while feeding, I found a very young and very weak kitten about 4 weeks old. I, of course, took Jasper right to a veterinarian to be checked. The doctor said that he needed to be built up with vitamins, and that the usual shots would have to wait until he was strong enough. Anyway, Jasper is now 2 months old and he is a beautiful boy. He has been back to the veterinarian three times since then, and as it turned out, one of the technicians there wanted to adopt Jasper for his daughter, the first time he saw him. I was a little hesitant at first, even though the technician was a professional. I didn’t understand why he wanted a sick kitten, so I told him that when the kitten was ready for adoption, I would let him know. When Jasper was ready, I called the technician and made arrangements to bring the cat to him, knowing that when Jasper was old enough, he would have him neutered. I have been corresponding with the technician, and Jasper is doing fine and is a happy-go-lucky boy. CHLOE – The grocery store that I go to every day is not in a good area, and it is unbelievable that even though I have rescued many cats, kittens and dogs, I always manage to find more that need help. A lot of people have difficulty taking care of themselves, and find it hard to take care of an animal. One day I went to the grocery store, and as I was about to enter the store, in the parking lot I spotted a 4 month old, female grey Tabby kitten. Chloe was friendly, clean and happy and had obviously been left there by her previous owner. My friend, and I took Chloe to the veterinarian to be checked out, and the doctor said that she seemed fine and healthy. I called someone that I know, who fosters and finds homes for kittens, and she took Chloe. Well, Chloe is with her, and what I like about this woman is that she will not adopt animals out, unless are spayed or neutered. So, Chloe will be with her until she is ready. Hello again.
Can you believe the summer is over, and it is September already? Please remember to keep an eye out for the strays in your area, and to start setting up those shelters for the strays, as the cooler weather is right around the corner. On another note, I would like to tell you about some of the rescues that we have been involved in lately. DEENA – Deena is the sister of a cat named Terry, who is from another one of Dolores’ litters. They look identical, and even have some of the same habits. Terry is staying with me in my home, as he has bad eyes and cannot fend for himself on the street. Deena is in a foster home being socialized, along with another cat from the same colony so that they can eventually be adopted out, because they are really not tough enough to make it on the street, where I have so many cats that are fixed, but really not wanted by the people who live in that area. Deena was fixed three weeks ago, and is coming along slowly. It is so overwhelming with all of these cats, and different predicaments, but meanwhile, they are safe, fed and cared for as best I can. I will keep you posted on Deena’s progress. GENIE & BROTHER – Genie, and her brother are two of Dolores’ kittens. Since, the man who lived on the property where the kittens were would not allow us to go onto the property to get them, it took a long time for us to find them and catch them. Finally, a nice understanding man, who worked at the library which was behind the property where the kittens were, allowed us to go onto the property to try to get them. The problem was that the kittens, who were almost 2 or 3 months old, had never eaten cat food and were still being nursed by their mother, who by this time, was dried up because she did not have enough food. It was imperative that we get these 3 kittens, and the mother, who needed to be fixed so that she would not have anymore kittens. It was a nightmare! There was a fence between the library property, and the property where the kittens were, so we lowered the kitten trap over the fence onto the property so that no one would notice, and within two minutes, after their first taste of food, both kittens went into the trap together. Of course, they had to be worked with, and built up with food and vitamins. After six weeks, Genie was spayed and ready for adoption. She is a beautiful Russian Blue. Her brother needs a little more socialization. Genie is healthy, happy and ready for adoption. HARVEY – Harvey is quite a character. He has a Tiger body, white paws and short little legs, but surprisingly, is very friendly. Being that he is an older cat, it is more difficult to find him a home, but I work on it every day, and hopefully, someone will take Harvey. He was dropped off at one of my colonies. Someone must have seen food, and cats and just left him there – so cruel. Every day, Harvey runs to me, rolls over and then goes to eat. It is heartbreaking, but Harvey knows that I am going to be there every day no matter what. Even when I get hurt, and have to use a walker I get there to feed them, but they will always be fed. |
