ROBBIN’S NEST
Hello again. It’s hard to believe that the summer is over, and it’s September already. Please remember to keep an eye out for the strays in your area, and to start setting up shelters for the strays, as the cooler weather is right around the corner. On another note, I would like to tell you about some of the rescues that we have been involved in lately. RICKI – One day, while I was feeding at one of my spots, I spotted a brand new Tabby kitten, about 3 months old all by herself. I assumed that someone had dumped her there. I ran back to my car, and got a carrier. At first, she would not go into the carrier, so I called a rescuer friend of mine and asked her to come immediately. She came right away, and together we were able to get the kitten into the carrier. The next day, I took Ricki to one of our veterinarians to be checked, etc. The doctor said that she was okay, except for an eye infection, for which she was given treatment. Ricki, was terrified and had to be socialized, but she came around very quickly. Before you know it, she was playing and acting like a normal, healthy kitten. Two weeks later, while I was feeding at one of my spots, a man that I know told me that his cat had died recently, and he wanted another kitten. I sent him pictures of some kittens that I had, and he and his wife picked Ricki. When Ricki was ready, we gave her to the man and his wife, and Ricki now has a wonderful, loving home. When she is old enough, she will be spayed. Meanwhile, I keep in touch with them, and Ricki is doing fine. MOMMA & HER 5 BABIES – While driving by one of the projects in Coney Island, I spotted a momma cat, and her 5 kittens. They looked very raggedy. I stopped, and immediately put out food for them. I went back the next day, and they were there waiting to be fed again. So, my rescuer friend and I set up a trap, and got 3 of the kittens and the momma, but it took a another day, and a half to get the other 2 kittens. We took them all to one of our veterinarians to be checked, etc. The kittens, except for one of them, and the momma are all feral. We kept the one kitten that is not feral to try to find a home for it, and we built up all the other cats nutritionally, and when they were all ready we had them spayed and neutered. After they were healed, we put them back in the same spot where they will be safe, and comfortable. I will continue to feed them there. SUNNY – I was driving, and in the middle of the block I spotted a ginger, and white male cat. He did not look well, so I stopped my car. He let me pick him up, and I put him right into a carrier. I took him to one of our participating veterinarians right away. The poor cat turned out to have a blockage in his urinary tract, and was in very bad shape. He stayed overnight in the hospital, and then my rescuer friend took care of him. He had to been taken to the veterinarian periodically to be checked, but he is now doing well and he is being fostered by my friend where he is safe, because he is a sweet, friendly cat. He will stay there until we find a home for him, and he will never be in the street again. His personality helped save his life.

ROBBIN’S NEST
Hello again. It’s the month of August, and I hope that you are all enjoying your summer, and staying safe. Please remember to try to keep an eye out for the strays, and help them with dry food and water whenever and wherever you can. On another note, I would like to tell you about some of the rescues that I have been involved in lately. MARIA & HER 5 KITTENS – I was driving in Coney Island, on my feeding rounds. I had to stopped for few minutes as there was an ambulance in front of me. While I was waiting, I looked around and spotted about four different cats hiding under the construction site by the projects. They looked skinny, and three of them were females. I jumped out of my car, and went to feed them, and to check out the situation. I have been feeding them every day since then. I called my rescuer friend, and she came to help me, and we managed to get one of the females. After that, we realized that she had kittens. We looked around the construction site, and found 4 of the kittens, which were no more than weeks old. As we were leaving, we saw another kitten hiding in a hole in the building. We were there all night trying to catch this kitten, but thank G-d, the next morning we finally got him. The kittens were taken to one of our veterinarians to be checked out, and they were found to be healthy, and they will be put up for adoption. The mother was vet checked, spayed etc., and when she was ready, she was returned to my new feeding spot where she will be comfortable (she was not friendly). I will keep you up to date on my progress in getting the other two adult females. SARA – One day, while I was feeding at one of my spots, someone came over to me to tell me that there were some cats behind a car repair place, which was nearby. We had been working for a while in that area trapping cats, getting them vet checked etc., and putting them back, which is called spay and release, but there were more. We still had not gotten the one that I named Sara. The next day, I went to the repair place before they opened with another rescuer, and we managed to get Sara, and took her to one of our veterinarians to be checked, spayed etc. While we there the feeder who takes care of them came, and told us another mother cat with 2 kittens showed up there. So, now we have to try to get these cats as well. I will keep you updated on my progress in getting this new little family. ZOEY & MIDNIGHT – Save our Strays received a phone call from a woman in East New York, who said that there were 2 very young kittens in her back yard that the mother cat was not feeding. My rescuer friend went to the check out the situation, and got the kittens. The kittens were taken to one of our veterinarians, and were treated for an Upper Respiratory Infection. My rescuer friend is fostering them, giving them KMR and medication, and will care for them until they are well. So far, the kittens are doing fine and when they are ready they will go up for adoption. We will eventually get the mother, and have her vet checked and spayed, but we must first make sure that she has no other kittens, that we haven’t found yet. ROBBIN’S NEST
Hello again. I would like to start off by wishing all of our friends, and their families a safe, and Happy Fourth of July. Please be aware of the strays in your area, as well as your own pets, as the noise from the fireworks frightens them. On another note, I would like to tell you about some of the rescues that I have been involved in lately. AMY – I went to one of my feeding spots, and spotted a new cat, with her left front leg in the air. She tried to walk, but could not put the foot down. I realized that something was very wrong because her leg was swollen. I picked her up, and put her into a carrier. She was friendly, so I assumed that she had been dumped there. I brought her to one of our veterinarians, as an emergency, I left her there for treatment etc., and a couple of hours later, they called me telling me that I should come there. When I got there, they showed me the X-rays, which showed that she had a broken leg and needed surgery during which they would insert pins. Save Our Strays gave the go-ahead for surgery. The veterinarian told me that it would take two month for her to heal after the surgery, and that she would have to stay in a crate. They told me to bring her back in 5 weeks to check, to make sure that she was healing correctly. I have her in my home in a comfortable crate, and will care for her until she is well, and when she is ready I will try to find a home for her. If not, I will keep her. ARIEL – Ariel is a kitten that I saw across the street from one of my feeding spots. I went across the street to investigate, and asked people if they knew who she belonged to. Some children who were playing nearby, said that someone had given them the cat, but that their mother keeps throwing the cat out. So, I took Ariel, and gave her to a foster, who has helped Save Our Strays before, and she said that she would care for her, and find her a home. We took her to one of our veterinarians to be checked, spayed etc. Ariel is very friendly, and was adopted three weeks later, when she was ready. She is in a loving home, and is doing fine. MARIO – Mario is an orange Tabby, with a little bit of white. He is about 8 yrs. old, and I have been feeding him since he was a kitten, which was when he came to one of my feeding spots. This particular spot is a good one where they have shelter, and nobody bothers them. There are about 6 cats there, and they all get along well. One day, when I went to feed there, I noticed that Mario was breathing very heavily. I rushed him to one of our veterinarians, and the doctor said that he had a bad Upper Respiratory Infection, and that there was an infection in his mouth. I took him to my house, where I am caring for him. His Respiratory Infection has improved. About 2 weeks ago, I brought him back to the veterinarian to have most of his teeth removed. He is getting better, and when he is ready he will be put back at my spot, where he wants to be. Thanks to Save Our Strays for all their help, and you, who give donations to pay the veterinarians. Hello again. June is here, and I would like to start off this month, by wishing all fathers, both human and animal, a HAPPY FATHER’S DAY. Now that the warmer weather is finally here, it is more important than ever to be aware of the strays out there. In the summer it is just as hard for them to find food, and especially water as it doesn’t rain as much this time of year. Food that is thrown out, and put in the garbage is not always an option, since the heat spoils the food. Although the warmer weather is a welcome break for all of us, the strays always need our help. Now I would like to tell you about some of the rescues that I have been involved in recently. TONY – I received a call from a friend of mine, telling me that she had found dog in Coney Island. The dog was a Maltipoo Mix. I drove over to check out the situation, and the dog had a ordor coming from its mouth, as if there was an infection. We brought the dog to one of our veterinarians the next day to be checked, and treated. When we picked the dog up the next day, we found that 6 of his teeth had been extracted. We took the dog home with all the necessary medication, and my friend decided to keep Tony. Tony now has a forever home, and will be okay. ANNABELLE – Annabelle is a Calico, female cat that, someone had told me, was not being treated properly. She is about 6 months old. The people who had previously owned her lived in a basement apartment, and keep taking cats in. They neglected them and the animals eventually end up on the street. The other cats that these people had were males, but they ended up at my feeding spot, so everything turned out okay. I went with a friend of mine to get Annabelle. The cat was very friendly, and I told her owners that I would be back in an hour to get her. When I went back, I found that the cat had escaped out the window, and I couldn’t find her. I told the owners that they had better find Annabelle, or I would be back with the police and that they had better not take in any more animals. I gave them my number, and the called me late that night, saying that they had found the cat, and I told them that I would come and get her. I got Annabelle, and brought her to my friend. We had her spayed, and my friend eventually found her a forever home. So, Annabelle is happy and doing fine. TEDDY – I got a phone call from someone in the projects, saying that their neighbor was going to put their cat out in the street, because they didn’t want it anymore. The cat is a 1½ year old Tuxedo cat. I went to the projects to pick up the cat. The girl who called me, was holding the cat until I got there. He is now in my house, and I will be taking him to one of our veterinarians to be checked, neutered etc., and then, when he is ready, I will look for a good home for him. I will keep you updated next month. ROBBIN’S NEST
Hello Again. May is here, and spring is in full bloom. Mother nature is showing all her beautiful colors, and thank G-d, the nice weather is finally here. This is a welcome break for us, and for the strays. A reminder that this month, we also celebrate Be Kind To Animals week, from May4th through May 10th. So, remember if you see an animal that needs a helping hand, whether it be food, water or helping to find it a new home, please try to help wherever and whenever you can. Both you, and the animal (or animals) in question will be glad that you did, and let us extend Be Kind To Animals all through the year. Now on another note, I would like to tell you about some of the rescues Save Our Strays, and I have been involved in lately. ONYX – A couple of months ago, I told you about a rescue that I did at one of my more difficult feeding spots. Onyx was the only female left there, and one of the cats that I was unable to trap at that time. I was at the point of giving up, and then, with the help of another rescuer, using a drop trap, we finally got her. We took her to one of our veterinarians to be checked out, spayed etc. A rescuer that I know is now fostering her, and will socialize her. When she is ready we will try to find her a forever home. If we are not able to do so, then she will be put back in the spot where I found her, which has since been made better and safer and she will be fine. GRAYSON, SMOKEY & MISTY – A while ago, I went into a Bodega, and saw three kittens that looked very sickly. I asked the owner if I could take them to a veterinarian to be treated, and he gave me permission to do so. I rushed them to one of our veterinarians. The doctor said that they had multiple problems including Upper Respiratory Infections, worms etc. They received treatment, were given medication, and then my rescuer friend and I had to take them back to the veterinarian periodically for tests etc. They have recovered, and we found forever homes for all three of them. They have been spayed/neutered and are happy and doing fine in their new homes. THE MECHANIC SHOP CREW – I Took my car to the mechanic to be fixed, and while I was there I saw a bunch of cats near the place. I went to check out the situation, and saw that there were females, males and kittens. I called my rescuer friend, and made arrangements to trap the cats. We managed to get 2 adults, I male and 1 female and took them to one of our veterinarians to be checked spayed/neutered etc. We are working on getting the rest of the cats, and having them spayed/neutered. When they are ready, they will be returned to the spot near the mechanic shop where there is a feeder, and they will be fine. ROBBIN’S NEST
