ROBBIN’S NEST

Hello again.

I would like to start off by wishing all of our friends, and their families a safe, and Happy Fourth of July.  Please be aware of the strays in your area, as well as your own pets, as the noise from the fireworks frightens them.

On another note, I would like to tell you about some of the rescues that I have been involved in lately.

AMY –
I went to one of my feeding spots, and spotted a new cat, with her left front leg in the air.  She tried to walk, but could not put the foot down.  I realized that something was very wrong because her leg was swollen.  I picked her up, and put her into a carrier.  She was friendly, so I assumed that she had been dumped there.  I brought her to one of our veterinarians, as an emergency, I left her there for treatment etc., and a couple of hours later, they called me telling me that I should come there.  When I got there, they showed me the X-rays, which showed that she had a broken leg and needed surgery during which they would insert pins.  Save Our Strays gave the go-ahead for surgery.  The veterinarian told me that it would take two month for her to heal after the surgery, and that she would have to stay in a crate.  They told me to bring her back in 5 weeks to check, to make sure that she was healing correctly.  I have her in my home in a comfortable crate, and will care for her until she is well, and when she is ready I will try to find a home for her.  If not, I will keep her.

ARIEL –
Ariel is a kitten that I saw across the street from one of my feeding spots.  I went across the street to investigate, and asked people if they knew who she belonged to.  Some children who were playing nearby, said that someone had given them the cat, but that their mother keeps throwing the cat out.  So, I took Ariel, and gave her to a foster, who has helped Save Our Strays before, and she said that she would care for her, and find her a home.  We took her to one of our veterinarians to be checked, spayed etc.  Ariel is very friendly, and was adopted three weeks later, when she was ready.  She is in a loving home, and is doing fine.

MARIO –
Mario is an orange Tabby, with a little bit of white.  He is about 8 yrs. old, and I have been feeding him since he was a kitten, which was when he came to one of my feeding spots.  This particular spot is a good one where they have shelter, and nobody bothers them.  There are about 6 cats there, and they all get along well.  One day, when I went to feed there, I noticed that Mario was breathing very heavily.  I rushed him to one of our veterinarians, and the doctor said that he had a bad Upper Respiratory Infection, and that there was an infection in his mouth.  I took him to my house, where I am caring for him.  His Respiratory Infection has improved.  About 2 weeks ago, I brought him back to the veterinarian to have most of his teeth removed.  He is getting better, and when he is ready he will be put back at my spot, where he wants to be.  Thanks to Save Our Strays for all their help, and you, who give donations to pay the veterinarians.

ROBBIN’S NEST

Hello again.

June is here, and I would like to start off this month, by wishing all fathers, both human and animal, a HAPPY FATHER’S DAY.  Now that the warmer weather is finally here, it is more important than ever to be aware of the strays out there.  In the summer it is just as hard for them to find food, and especially water as it doesn’t rain as much this time of year.  Food that is thrown out, and put in the garbage is not always an option, since the heat spoils the food.  Although the warmer weather is a welcome break for all of us, the strays always need our help.

Now I would like to tell you about some of the rescues that I have been involved in recently.

TONY –
I received a call from a friend of mine, telling me that she had found dog in Coney Island.  The dog was a Maltipoo Mix.  I drove over to check out the situation, and the dog had a ordor coming from its mouth, as if there was an infection.  We brought the dog to one of our veterinarians the next day to be checked, and treated.  When we picked the dog up the next day, we found that 6 of his teeth had been extracted.  We took the dog
home with all the necessary medication, and my friend decided to keep Tony.  Tony now has a forever home, and will be okay.

ANNABELLE –
Annabelle is a Calico, female cat that, someone had told me, was not being treated properly.  She is about 6 months old.  The people who had previously owned her lived in a basement apartment, and keep taking cats in.  They neglected them and the animals eventually end up on the street.  The other cats that these people had were males, but they ended up at my feeding spot, so everything turned out okay.  I went with a friend of mine to get Annabelle.  The cat was very friendly, and I told her owners that I would be back in an hour to get her.  When I went back, I found that the cat had escaped out the window, and I couldn’t find her.  I told the owners that they had better find Annabelle, or I would be back with the police and that they had better not take in any more animals.  I gave them my number, and the called me late that night, saying that they had found the cat, and I told them that I would come and get her.  I got Annabelle, and brought her to my friend.  We had her spayed, and my friend eventually found her a forever home.  So, Annabelle is happy and doing fine.

TEDDY –
I got a phone call from someone in the projects, saying that their neighbor was going to put their cat out in the street, because they didn’t want it anymore.  The cat is a 1½ year old Tuxedo cat.  I went to the projects to pick up the cat.  The girl who called me, was holding the cat until I got there.  He is now in my house, and I will be taking him to one of our veterinarians to be checked, neutered etc., and then, when he is ready, I will look for a good home for him.  I will keep you updated next month.

ROBBIN’S NEST

Hello Again.

May is here, and spring is in full bloom.  Mother nature is showing all her beautiful colors, and thank G-d, the nice weather is finally here.  This is a welcome break for us, and for the strays.  A reminder that this month, we also celebrate Be Kind To Animals week, from May4th through May 10th.  So, remember if you see an animal that needs a helping hand, whether it be food, water or helping to find it a new home, please try to help wherever and whenever you can.  Both you, and the animal (or animals) in question will be glad that you did, and let us extend Be Kind To Animals all through the year.

Now on another note, I would like to tell you about some of the rescues Save Our Strays, and I have been involved in lately.

ONYX –
A couple of months ago, I told you about a rescue that I did at one of my more difficult feeding spots.  Onyx was the only female left there, and one of the cats that I was unable to trap at that time.  I was at the point of giving up, and then, with the help of another rescuer, using a drop trap, we finally got her. We took her to one of
our veterinarians to be checked out, spayed etc.  A rescuer that I know is now fostering her, and will socialize her.  When she is ready we will try to find her a forever home.  If we are not able to do so, then she will be put back in the spot where I found her, which has since been made better and safer and she will be fine.

GRAYSON, SMOKEY & MISTY –
A while ago, I went into a Bodega, and saw three kittens that looked very sickly.  I asked the owner if I could take them to a veterinarian to be treated, and he gave me permission to do so.  I rushed them to one of our veterinarians.  The doctor said that they had multiple problems including Upper Respiratory Infections, worms etc.  They received treatment, were given medication, and then my rescuer friend and I had to take them back to the veterinarian periodically for tests etc.  They have recovered, and we found forever homes for all three of them.  They have been spayed/neutered and are happy and doing fine in their new homes.

THE MECHANIC SHOP CREW –
I  Took my car to the mechanic to be fixed, and while I was there I saw a bunch of cats near the place.  I went to check out the situation, and saw that there were females, males and kittens.  I called my rescuer friend, and made arrangements to trap the cats.  We managed to get 2 adults, I male and 1 female and took them to one of our veterinarians to be checked spayed/neutered etc.  We are working on getting the rest of the cats, and having them spayed/neutered.  When they are ready, they will be returned to the spot near the mechanic shop where there is a feeder, and they will be fine.

ROBBIN’S NEST

Hello Again,

April is here, and, spring is upon us.  It has been a hard winter.  I am glad that it is behind us, and I am sure that the strays agree.  We can finally enjoy better weather.  I would like to wish all our friends, and members a HAPPY EASTER, and a HAPPY PASSOVER.  Also, a reminder that this month is Prevention of Cruelty To Animals Month.  So, as I have said before, if you see an animal that looks as though it has been mistreated, don’t ignore it, do something about it.  Both you, and the animal (or animals) in question will be glad that you did.
Now on another note, I would like to tell you about some of the rescues Save Our Strays, and I have been involved in lately.
LAURA –
I was going on my feeding rounds, when about a half a block from one of my spots I stopped for a light and heard a cat crying.  I looked to my right, and saw a cat in distress, crying and looking to people for help.  Of course, no one responded.  So, I got out of my car, and the cat came right over to me.  I petted her, and gave her food, but she really wasn’t that hungry because she was sick.  I went to my car, and noticed

that I had forgotten to put a carrier in it. So, I called a woman that I know, who lives a block away and had a cat and I told her to come immediately with a carrier.  While
waiting for her, I tended to the cat as best I could so that it would not be frightened.  The woman came, and I put the cat in the carrier and brought the cat to my house since it was late in the evening, and could not get her to a vet at that time.  I put her in a crate in my house, and tried to comfort her until morning.  Then in the morning, I brought her to one of our veterinarians as an emergency.  They took her, checked her out and found that she had an Upper Respiratory Infection.  She was treated, and I took her back to my house to care for her.  In about ten days, when she was better, I took her back to the veterinarian for shots, deworming etc., and they said that she had already been spayed so I assumed that she had been owned by someone, and abandoned.  She is still in my house, and I will probably keep her, because she is very sweet.  Laura is doing fine.

JOLENE –
Jolene was one of the kittens that I had rescued previously from one of my spots, along with her sibling, but she is still waiting for adoption.  When I was out feeding I met someone who said that they were interested in adopting a kitten.  I evaluated the person, and the circumstances and it was a home that I could easily check on, since in was in the area where I feed.  Jolene was adopted by this person, and is happy and doing well.  Another happy ending.

VICKI –
Vicki was found by a supermarket with her kitten.  I got Vikie, and her kitten, and brought them to one of our veterinarians to checked out etc.  I socialized the kitten, whose names was Vera, and eventually found her a home.  Vicki is still semi-feral, so I put her back at one of my newer feeding where there are other cats, and where she will be safe.  As time passed, Vicki started to become friendlier.  As you know, I don’t like to leave friendly cats in the street.  So, I trapped her and she was in my house for a while.  Then, another rescuer that I know got a call from someone who wanted to adopt a female cat that was older.  Vicki now lives in a home with a nice couple, and is happy.

ROBBIN’S NEST

Hello Again,

I would like to start off this month by wishing all of our readers a HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY, and a HAPPY PURIM.  Remember that Daylight Savings begins on March 9th, so don’t forget to fix your clocks.

Now I would like to tell you about some of the rescues that I have been involved in recently.

WINSTON –
Someone who feeds cats by the projects, told me that there was a cat there, and that it had one eye half closed.  I explained to her that I would trap the cat, but asked if she could hold it.  When we got the cat we didn’t know that he was tame.  So, we took the cat to one of Save our Strays’ veterinarians to be checked out and treated.  Winston has an infection in his eye, and it will be a while before he is better.  In the meantime, the woman will hold him and treat him until he is well, and then hopefully, we will find him a forever home.

MAMA –
At one of my colonies, I had all the females spayed, except one, as she was a problem to get and is not always there when I go to feed.  I realized that the only way to get her would be with a drop trap, but I would need to get someone to help me.  Finally, with the help of another rescuer, we got her.  We had her spayed, and the other rescuer agreed to hold her, until she was ready to go back to the colony.  When she was ready, we put her back in her colony and she is fine now.  Thank G-d, no more babies.  Now I have to work on the males.

COSMO –
Last month, we did a story about a cat name Richie.  Richie was adopted.  The couple called a few days later, to say that Richie was doing great, and they wanted to adopt a companion for him.  During the time that Richie was being fostered, there was another kitten there named Cosmo that he played with all the time.  So, when the couple mentioned a companion for Richie, I thought that Cosmo would be perfect.  Amazingly, the couple decided to take Cosmo, and both cats, we are told, are happy and doing fine.

ROBBIN’S NEST

Happy Valentine’s Day to all of our readers.  Remember that this is the month of Love, so let’s all make it a priority to be kind to each other, and those less fortunate than we are.

On another note, I would like to tell you about some rescues that I have been involved in lately.

ARCHIE –
Archie was found by a school.  He is a 3½ month old orange Tabby.  He was in bad shape, so I called a rescuer friend of mine to help me trap him.  We set a trap, and eventually he went in.  My rescuer friend took him home to his house.  The next day, the rescuer took Archie to one of Save Our Strays’ veterinarians to be checked out, and treated as needed.  After two weeks of treatment, Archie recovered, and is now a beautiful healthy kitten.  We were able to find him a forever home right away, with a woman in the neighborhood, who has another cat.  Archie will need time to adjust to his new home, but he will be okay.

ROMA, GINA & JASPER –

At one of my feeding spots, there is a mother cat that I have been trying to trap.  It hasn’t been easy to get her because she runs into a locked area that I cannot get into.  I knew that she had given birth about 2½ to 3 months ago, so I had to wait for her to bring the kittens out.  I knew of a rescuer, who would taken kittens up to 3 months old, socialize them and get them adopted.  One day, when I was feeding at this particular spot, I spotted the kittens, set a small trap and managed to get all of them.  I called the woman who was going to foster them, and brought the kittens right over to her.  We set them up in a crate with everything they needed, and in about five days a woman from an animal rescue group in New Jersey came to take them, and bring them to the rescue place where they will be cared for, and put up for adoption.

NINO –
Nino is a Male Maltese Mix dog, between 5 and 7 years of age.  I received a call from another feeder telling me that she had spotted this raggedy looking dog,
and took him to her apartment.  I called Save Our Strays, and they made arrangement for me to take Nino to a veterinarian the next day to be checked out etc.  The other feeder, and I took Nino to the veterinarian.  He was examined, and given a bath and shots.  Neutering will come later.  The veterinarian said that he is basically okay, but needs to be built up, which the other feeder will do.  She is keeping him in her apartment, and will care for him there.  Meanwhile he is safe, and she will try to find him a forever home, otherwise, she will keep him.

ROBBIN’S NEST

Hello again.

January – a new year.  As you get older, time flies faster.  I would like to start off this month by wishing all of our friends, and members a Happy, and Healthy New Year.  Winter is now in full swing, and I hope that everyone has their shelters up, and working for the strays, to keep them protected from the elements.  Please remember to stock them with dry food, and water.

On another note, I would like to tell you about some of the rescues that I have been involved in lately.

BELINDA  -
While on my rounds, I was stopped by someone who told me that there was a mother cat, and 5 kittens in someone’s yard nearby.  I called a rescuer friend of mine, and she came and we went to investigate.  We knew that we would have to get the mother first, so I set my trat with food in it, and walked away.  The mother cat, who I named Belinda, went right into the trap.  We then immediately picked up the 5 kittens, and put them in the trap with her, since they were only about 7 to 10 days.  We wrapped the trap in a blanket, and put them in the car.  My rescuer friend, took the

BELINDA  - (Cont.)
mother, and the kittens to her home and will set them up in a crate, and care for them until they are ready to be taken to a veterinarian.  Meanwhile, they are safe. I will keep everyone updated on their progress.

ARCHIE –
One day, while I was feeding someone came over to me to tell me that there was kitten around the corner, and that it was crying and in bad shape. I immediately went to check it out, and set up one of my baby traps.  I walked away, and eventually Archie went right in.  I put him in the car, took him to my house and the next day I took him to the veterinarian to checked out.  The veterinarian said that Archie had an Upper Respiratory Infection, and he was given medication, and everything else that he needed, i.e. shots, de-worming etc was taken care of.  Two weeks passed, and Archie healed beautifully, and he is almost ready for adoption.  If I hadn’t picked him up, he probably would not have made it.  I assumed that he was probably dumped here.  He is doing fine, and will find his forever home.

FRANKIE –
Frankie is a Tiger cat with a very nice personality.  I found him by one of my feeding spots, but it didn’t like to socialize with other cats and he tended to stay down the block from the feeding spot.   So, I would feed him wherever he was.  After a few days, I noticed that he was scratching his tail a lot.  So, I put in a carrier and brought him to my rescuer friend, who had Belinda and her kittens.  We made an appointment to take Frankie to the veterinarian, and while were there, the veterinarian said that Frankie had an infection in his tail, and was full of parasites and needed to be treated immediately.  He was a salve and oral medication.  After about three weeks, his tail finally healed, and the parasites were taken care of, but he still scratches his skin.  So, we brought him back to the veterinarian, and he said that he thinks that it is a nerve problem, so he gave him a medication called Gabetentin.  He has been on this medication for a week, and we are hoping that it will  work so that we can find him a forever home.

ROBBIN’S NEST

Hello again.

I would like to begin by wishing all of our readers a HAPPY THANKSGIVING.  November is here, and the cooler weather has started.  If you haven’t set up your shelters for the strays, to prepare for the cooler months ahead, now is the time.  We must always remember that “we are their guardians.”

On another note, I would like to tell you about more of the rescues that we have been involved in lately.

RICHIE –
About two months ago, while driving my route in Coney Island, I noticed a whole bunch of cats that were young, deathly skinny and sickly looking.  There were about 20 of them throughout the whole block.  I, of course, stopped my car and took out a bunch of food and started checking out the situation.  It was really bad.  I went down the block feeding them, and assessing the situation to see the number of males, and females.  I realized that I now had another spot to take care of.  I got another rescuer to help me, and called Save Our Strays explaining the situation.  We started trapping the females, but we knew that they had to be built up first before they could be spayed.  Once they were ready, we then started taking them to be fixed.  We also found homes for 5 kittens.  The females that were feral had to be put back at the spot when they were ready.  We are now working on getting all the males neutered.  Down the block, I noticed a cat that we call Richie, who always stayed by himself, and just wanted to be loved by people.  We surmised that he must have been abandoned by his owner.  Someone in the block was allowing him to go into their basement at night, but he is still a street cat.  Finally, I picked Richie up, and took him to a veterinarian to get checked, have shots etc.  He also had an infection on his tail.  As soon as he is better, we will find him a home.  Meanwhile, he is safe, happy and off the street.

KIKI –
I went into a variety store, and saw a white and black domestic cat sitting on the back stairs, looking scared.  I noticed that it was a female.  I spoke to the owner, and asked if he had ever taken her to a veterinarian, and told him that she needed to be spayed.  I also checked to see what he was feeding her.  The owner gave me permission to take her to the veterinarian, but I had to trap her because she was scared.  I trapped her, and took her to be spayed, checked, given shots etc.  When I brought her back, she tore open the stitches.  I had to take her back to the veterinarian to be treated, and he also put a cone on her so that she would not bother the stitches again.  She healed well, is doing fine and seems to be getting friendlier. I check on her once in a while.

SMOKEY –
One day, while driving my route I spotted a 4-month-old Russian Blue kitten in the street.  He was very friendly, so I picked him up and put him in a carrier and took him to an animal person that I know, who had two kittens herself, that were going to a rescue group in Connecticut the next day.  She told to bring Smokey right over, which I did.  The next day, he went with the other two kittens to Connecticut.  He is safe, and doing fine.  A happy ending.

Hello again.

On another note, I would like to tell you about more of the rescues that we have been involved in lately.

JOEY & SAMSON –
I received a call from someone telling me that in an area behind her building,  there were 4 cats, which she had been feeding, that needed to be spayed and neutered.  I went over, and managed to trap 2 of them.  There was one male, and one female.  I took them to one of our veterinarians, and had them checked out, spayed, neutered, given shots etc. and had someone hold them until they were ready to be put back.  When they were put back, I was able to trap the other two cats that where there, and took them to the veterinarian to be taken care of as well.  Because they were males, they did not have to be held as longs as the others.  They are all back in their feeding spot, and doing well.

JACK & JILL –
Save Our Strays received a call from someone saying that they had seen a man carrying a shoebox containing 2 kittens, about 12 days old, that he had recently found on the street.  He had made quite a few calls before this, but no one would help him.  One of the ladies from Save Our Strays called me to see if I could help.  I immediately went to meet this man in Coney Island, and picked up the kittens who were cold, and crying.  Save Our Strays managed to find someone to foster, and bottle feed them, and I dropped them off to the person who was going to care for them.  They were taken to the veterinarian to be checked, and treated.  They were given medication, and Prebiotics for their stomachs, and are doing much better now.  I will keep you informed on their progress.

TIMMY, FRANKIE & JOCELYN –
I was told by another rescuer that there was a spot where there were many cats that needed to be spayed, and neutered.  I went to the spot with another rescuer, and managed to trap 3 kittens.  We took them to one of our veterinarians to be checked out etc, and the doctor said that they where all healthy.  We managed to find a shelter in New Jersey that was willing to work with them, and adopt them out.  They are doing fine now, and coming along well.

ROBBIN’S NEST

Hello again.

I would like to begin by wishing all of our friends, and members a HAPPY COLUMBUS DAY, and to all who celebrate, a HAPPY ROSH HASHANAH, and a easy fast.  It’s the month of October, and the cooler weather will be here before long.  I know that I have said this before, but please remember that now is also the time to start setting up your shelters for the strays, and prepare for the cooler months ahead.  We are also celebrating Halloween this month, so please remember to keep an eye out for the strays in your area, and your own pets as well.  Watch out for black cats especially, as they are targeted this time of year.  As I always say, “we must remember that we are their guardians.”

On another note, I would like to tell you about more of the rescues that we have been involved in lately.

DONNY –
On my rounds, I stopped into a local Bodega to get something to drink, and the man behind the counter was talking about his cat, a six month old orange male stray that he took in, and said that the cat was not neutered and was beginning to smell.
When I heard this, I told him that I would take the cat to a veterinarian, and have it neutered, given shots etc.  I called Save Our Strays, and they made an appointment with a veterinarian for the next day.  I picked up the cat from the Bodega the next day, took it to the veterinarian, had it neutered, given shots etc. and then brought the cat back to it’s owner, who will care for it in his apartment.

  SAMMI –
One day, while feeding at one of my spots, I saw a new cat, a female Tiger cat, about 7 months old and extremely skinny and malnourished looking.  I knew that she needed to be built up before I could have her spayed, so I fed her every day for about a month, and she started to fill out.  She was semi-friendly, so I set a trap and she went right in.  I had her spayed, given shots etc.  She was held by a foster that I know until she was well, and then I put her back in my colony where she is safe and happy because she was accepted by all of the cats there.  She is doing fine.

SANDY –
Sandy is a female, Calico cat about 11 months old.  I went out to feed at one of my spots at about 11:00 p.m., and went to the box where I feed the cats, which is always half covered, and all of a sudden a new cat came out of the box.  I got a small  blanket, and put it in the box so that the cat could lay on it, since she felt safe there.  The next day, when I returned to the spot, I noticed that the cat had a clipped ear, so I assumed that she had obviously been dumped there.  Sandy is comfortable here, and is starting to mingle with the other cats.  She is safe, happy and has plenty of food and water.

JASPER –

As I was driving up the block, after feeding at one of my spots, I saw a cat limping on the next block.  The cat was a male, and completely gray like a Russian Blue.  I immediately stopped, took the trap out of my car and put salmon in it.  After I set it up, I walked away and watched from a distance hoping that he would go in.  After a while, he finally went into the trap.  I covered the trap, and put it in my car.  It was late, and I knew that I couldn’t get to a veterinarian at that hour, so I took the cat to my apartment and put him in a cage.  Jasper is semi-feral, but I have everything that I need to work with him.  The next day, in the morning after my rounds, I made an appointment to bring him to a veterinarian to be checked out, etc.  The doctor said that Jasper had somehow sprained his leg, but it was not broken and he needed a few weeks rest. He will stay in my house where he will be cared for, and when he is ready he will be neutered.  After that, I will decide what to do with him. Meanwhile, he is safe, and cared for.

JACKSON –
I was driving on Avenue W, and I stopped for a light.  I looked to the right, and saw a carrier with a cat in it, in the grass.  I ran over, and got the carrier and put it in my car.  Then I gave the cat some food in the carrier.  I called a rescuer friend of mine, who helps me, and she agreed to foster him.  I drove the cat right over to her house, and she came down and got him.  When she got the cat in her house, she immediately called Save Our Strays, and they made an appointment for the cat to be seen by a veterinarian for a check-up.  The doctor said that the cat was not neutered, but that he was well cared for.  He will need to be neutered, given shots and have his teeth checked.  Jackson, is friendly, but very frightened.  He will come around, and when he is ready he will go up for adoption.
