ROBBIN’S NEST
Hello again. I would like to begin by wishing all of our readers a HAPPY THANKSGIVING. November is here, and the cooler weather has started. If you haven’t set up your shelters for the strays, to prepare for the cooler months ahead, now is the time. We must always remember that “we are their guardians.” On another note, I would like to tell you about more of the rescues that we have been involved in lately. RICHIE – About two months ago, while driving my route in Coney Island, I noticed a whole bunch of cats that were young, deathly skinny and sickly looking. There were about 20 of them throughout the whole block. I, of course, stopped my car and took out a bunch of food and started checking out the situation. It was really bad. I went down the block feeding them, and assessing the situation to see the number of males, and females. I realized that I now had another spot to take care of. I got another rescuer to help me, and called Save Our Strays explaining the situation. We started trapping the females, but we knew that they had to be built up first before they could be spayed. Once they were ready, we then started taking them to be fixed. We also found homes for 5 kittens. The females that were feral had to be put back at the spot when they were ready. We are now working on getting all the males neutered. Down the block, I noticed a cat that we call Richie, who always stayed by himself, and just wanted to be loved by people. We surmised that he must have been abandoned by his owner. Someone in the block was allowing him to go into their basement at night, but he is still a street cat. Finally, I picked Richie up, and took him to a veterinarian to get checked, have shots etc. He also had an infection on his tail. As soon as he is better, we will find him a home. Meanwhile, he is safe, happy and off the street. KIKI – I went into a variety store, and saw a white and black domestic cat sitting on the back stairs, looking scared. I noticed that it was a female. I spoke to the owner, and asked if he had ever taken her to a veterinarian, and told him that she needed to be spayed. I also checked to see what he was feeding her. The owner gave me permission to take her to the veterinarian, but I had to trap her because she was scared. I trapped her, and took her to be spayed, checked, given shots etc. When I brought her back, she tore open the stitches. I had to take her back to the veterinarian to be treated, and he also put a cone on her so that she would not bother the stitches again. She healed well, is doing fine and seems to be getting friendlier. I check on her once in a while. SMOKEY – One day, while driving my route I spotted a 4-month-old Russian Blue kitten in the street. He was very friendly, so I picked him up and put him in a carrier and took him to an animal person that I know, who had two kittens herself, that were going to a rescue group in Connecticut the next day. She told to bring Smokey right over, which I did. The next day, he went with the other two kittens to Connecticut. He is safe, and doing fine. A happy ending.
