ROBBIN’S NEST

Hello again.

I would like to begin by wishing all of our friends, and members a HAPPY COLUMBUS DAY, and to all who celebrate, a HAPPY ROSH HASHANAH, and a easy fast.  It’s the month of October, and the cooler weather will be here before long.  I know that I have said this before, but please remember that now is also the time to start setting up your shelters for the strays, and prepare for the cooler months ahead.  We are also celebrating Halloween this month, so please remember to keep an eye out for the strays in your area, and your own pets as well.  Watch out for black cats especially, as they are targeted this time of year.  As I always say, “we must remember that we are their guardians.”

On another note, I would like to tell you about more of the rescues that we have been involved in lately.

DONNY –
On my rounds, I stopped into a local Bodega to get something to drink, and the man behind the counter was talking about his cat, a six month old orange male stray that he took in, and said that the cat was not neutered and was beginning to smell.
When I heard this, I told him that I would take the cat to a veterinarian, and have it neutered, given shots etc.  I called Save Our Strays, and they made an appointment with a veterinarian for the next day.  I picked up the cat from the Bodega the next day, took it to the veterinarian, had it neutered, given shots etc. and then brought the cat back to it’s owner, who will care for it in his apartment.

  SAMMI –
One day, while feeding at one of my spots, I saw a new cat, a female Tiger cat, about 7 months old and extremely skinny and malnourished looking.  I knew that she needed to be built up before I could have her spayed, so I fed her every day for about a month, and she started to fill out.  She was semi-friendly, so I set a trap and she went right in.  I had her spayed, given shots etc.  She was held by a foster that I know until she was well, and then I put her back in my colony where she is safe and happy because she was accepted by all of the cats there.  She is doing fine.

SANDY –
Sandy is a female, Calico cat about 11 months old.  I went out to feed at one of my spots at about 11:00 p.m., and went to the box where I feed the cats, which is always half covered, and all of a sudden a new cat came out of the box.  I got a small  blanket, and put it in the box so that the cat could lay on it, since she felt safe there.  The next day, when I returned to the spot, I noticed that the cat had a clipped ear, so I assumed that she had obviously been dumped there.  Sandy is comfortable here, and is starting to mingle with the other cats.  She is safe, happy and has plenty of food and water.

JASPER –

As I was driving up the block, after feeding at one of my spots, I saw a cat limping on the next block.  The cat was a male, and completely gray like a Russian Blue.  I immediately stopped, took the trap out of my car and put salmon in it.  After I set it up, I walked away and watched from a distance hoping that he would go in.  After a while, he finally went into the trap.  I covered the trap, and put it in my car.  It was late, and I knew that I couldn’t get to a veterinarian at that hour, so I took the cat to my apartment and put him in a cage.  Jasper is semi-feral, but I have everything that I need to work with him.  The next day, in the morning after my rounds, I made an appointment to bring him to a veterinarian to be checked out, etc.  The doctor said that Jasper had somehow sprained his leg, but it was not broken and he needed a few weeks rest. He will stay in my house where he will be cared for, and when he is ready he will be neutered.  After that, I will decide what to do with him. Meanwhile, he is safe, and cared for.

JACKSON –
I was driving on Avenue W, and I stopped for a light.  I looked to the right, and saw a carrier with a cat in it, in the grass.  I ran over, and got the carrier and put it in my car.  Then I gave the cat some food in the carrier.  I called a rescuer friend of mine, who helps me, and she agreed to foster him.  I drove the cat right over to her house, and she came down and got him.  When she got the cat in her house, she immediately called Save Our Strays, and they made an appointment for the cat to be seen by a veterinarian for a check-up.  The doctor said that the cat was not neutered, but that he was well cared for.  He will need to be neutered, given shots and have his teeth checked.  Jackson, is friendly, but very frightened.  He will come around, and when he is ready he will go up for adoption.
