SOUTH CAROLINA RESCUE THE LUCK OF LUCCI Lucci was a member of one of our managed colonies, with a shy demeanor. A handsome little black cat with a white chest feather, and suddenly, a drooling mouth. He was still in good body condition, and the decision was made to get him to the veterinarian for an exam. Drooling can indicate sore mouth or teeth, or nausea. As he was still eating the canned food, but tended to avoid the dry, it was likely that his mouth needed attention. He was easily coaxed into a carrier, and off we went to the vet. At the vet, it was determined that Lucci was approximately 10 years old, and was suffering from stomatitis, very raw and inflamed gums and palate, and resorbing teeth. He was given both an injectable long -antibiotic, and an anti-inflammatory for pain and sent home to one of our rescue partners, and scheduled for dentistry when mid-way into the antibiotic effectiveness, it was determined that all of Lucci’s teeth will need to be removed at once. His gums were extremely fragile, and so painful that once the pain meds had worn off, he was in extreme pain. He is now a happier camper. Lucci will need to be monitored going forward for his stomatitis, which should be better since his teeth are out, but it could still flare up periodically. It is an immune mediated issue, and may require additional intervention and medication appropriately. He will be transitioned into Little Feet Haven Sanctuary. He will then be under constant supervision, and fed canned and home cooked food to keep his nutritional needs a priority and the inflammation to a minimum. Managing a colony doesn’t stop with feeding. It also includes medical care, and appropriate alternatives as needed. Save Our Strays believes in doing the best we can for every animal that comes into our hands, and care. Best wishes for a long, and happy and pain free life in a sunny window, Lucci!
