SOUTH CAROLINA RESCUE

BENJAMIN’S STORY

Tiny Ben came into a local Animal Control, unable to walk.  His front legs were swollen, and frozen so that he was essentially army crawling on his elbows, and knees.  He was also running a fairly significant fever.  When the joints were needle aspirated, and the fluid examined under the microscope, it was found to contain high numbers of bacteria.  He was started on antibiotics appropriate for a 6-week-old baby, and a medical rescue was searched for.

Our local rescue partner was contacted, who then reached out to see if Save Our Strays had any availability for this baby, who would likely need additional workup, medications and physical therapy.  We were on board.

Ben was transferred to the rescue, and admitted to the veterinary hospital. Ben is a happy little boy, in spite of his physical issues.  He is getting physical
therapy every day, along with k-laser treatments.  The swelling is down in all joints, and he is actually up on his back legs, but the elbows are still constricted. Soft splints are being applied, alternating, two days on, two days off, in hopes of straightening those front legs into a normal position.  Ben plays with the other kittens in foster, eats very energetically and enthusiastically, and uses his litter box without issues.  Ben may never be completely normal, so we have begun to put feelers out for a special needs home.

Save Our Strays stepped up for this little broken boy, at a time when others were reluctant to.  His medical costs will be higher than for a normal kitten.  Not only will he need regular vetting, vaccines, deworming and neutering, he will also continue to require therapy for the foreseeable future.

Can you find it in your heart to help us help Ben?

SOUTH CAROLINA RESCUE

GRAY CHARLES

Tiny baby, less than one pound, tired, cold, hungry, all alone and blind.
Five-week old Gray was found crying in an alley, starving, and without help, just waiting for a miserable end.  No mom, no siblings, no one at all.  The Fates smiled down on Gray - an angel heard him cry.  Angels do walk among us.  They hear those fading cries for help, and won’t stop until the needy are gathered up.

Gray was taken immediately to the veterinarian for stabilizing, and evaluation.  Both eyes were grossly swollen, and pasted shut.  Fluids, heat and clean up began.  His eyelids were gently warmed, and washed so that the real damage could be assessed.  Gray’s right eye was badly infected, but still present.  Gray’s left eye was already ruptured, and will not be salvageable.  The right eye will likely have some residual lens scarring, but his veterinarian believes  that there is a good possibility that he will have at least 50% of his sight on that side.

Because Gray is so tiny, he will need to grow and gain weight before he can be considered for the surgical removal, and suture of his right eye.  He is in excellent foster care, eating well and playing like a normal kitten.  It’s amazing how resilient, and adaptable these babies are, once pulled back from shock and trauma.  Welcome to Save Our Strays, little Gray Charles.

We are committed to seeing Gray through all his vetting, including his feline testing, vaccinations, microchipping, neutering and eye enucleation.  Your help is needed, as your generous donations enable us to keep moving forward to save these babies.  Gray will be campaigned for adoption to his forever home when he is healed and completely recovered.
