SOUTH CAROLINA RESCUE
On May 17th, our rescue partner South Carolina received a message from one of our Veterinarians, and a frantic call from one of her clients. Three tiny, 4-week-old kittens were found, one heavily infested with maggots. The Veterinarian treated the babies, and reached out to us for rescue assistance. We answered the call for help, and picked up the babies. The poor fly strike baby was badly wounded by the maggots, and required extensive wound care. All three babies needed support, a clean environment and good groceries. As time went on, and Fredo's wounds were healing, we noticed that his abdomen was always wet. It was discovered that he had a hole in his belly that he was leaking urine from. It was thought that this was from maggot damage. As he was much too small for corrective action, Fredo was maintained by keeping him and his bedding scrupulously clean, treating his urinary infection first and then preventing future ones with prophylactic measures. All three babies were together, happy, healthy, and active otherwise. All three tested negative for feline Aids, and Leukemia and all three had vaccines administered. When Fredo hit the 3 lb mark, a decision was made to schedule his neuter and corrective bladder surgery. This is where the happy story changes. It was discovered that the damage was more extensive that they thought. He had a devastating genetic defect. Fredo was born without a bladder, and although an attempt was valiantly made to structure one for him from the surrounding tissue, he succumbed 48 hours post-op. He was pain free, full belly, warm, comfortable and loved. Not all stories have happy endings, and despite our grief and sorrow, we understand that we did everything we possibly could for him. He was a loved, pampered little boy in our care for the 12 weeks he spent with us. We will honor him by continuing to do our very best for those who come into our care. See you on the other side, sweet boy. You will never be forgotten.
