SOUTH CAROLINA RESCUE ALAUNUS – THE GIFT OF HEALING Little Alaunus was accepted from a local animal shelter, as a injured nine-week-old baby. His left femur (thigh bone) was broken at the growth plate. He was found painful, and trembling in the road gutter, after being hit by a car and left to suffer and die. A good Samaritan, who witnessed the strike, stopped to scoop him up. He was seen by the Shelter vet, treated for shock and pain, and put on complete and total cage rest for 6 weeks, in hopes that his break would heal without surgery. Unfortunately, there was no room at the Shelter Vet for a 6-week cage restriction, so we stepped up. Keeping a nine-week-old kitten quiet is not for the faint of heart. He was confined to a hard-shell kennel, strategically placed so that he was engaged (passively) to the household, and within visual access to the birds and activity in the back yard. This was done so that he would still be a part of life, without causing any stress to his healing leg. At week 4 of restriction, he was re-radiographed - his leg was healing! Although not completely centered, the joint was functional and the leg was able to bear his weight. At week 6 of restricted rest, he was transferred into a 3-story cat condo to begin climbing therapy and activity to prep him for normal life. He will be neutered late September, has normal gait and movement, and will begin campaigning for his forever after home. Please help us to help those who are in need. We can change the world, one needy baby at a time.
