SOUTH CAROLINA RESCUE - November - 2025

HELEN’S STORY

Imagine being a tiny baby, and trying to survive out there on your own - no mom, no food, no fresh water, no warm bed with your siblings.  Imagine your eyes being infected so badly that they crust completely over, rupture and your world slowly gets smaller and smaller as your sight fades.

Survival now becomes impossible, from difficult.

Helen was found hiding under someone’s shed - thin, hungry and dehydrated. Both eyes were painfully infected, crusted over and likely ruptured.  She was completely blinded, in pain and unable to hunt or even beg for food.  She had reached the point that she didn’t even care anymore, just huddled miserably in a tiny ball.

Helen was brought, by a good Samaritan, to the local Animal Control, where it was discovered how sweet a little soul she is, despite her level of pain.  No hisses, no growls, nothing but trust and soft purrs for everyone.  The decision was made to get her free from pain, start antibiotics, re-hydrate, get her to an experienced medical foster and reach out to special needs friendly rescues.

We got the inquiry on a Friday evening, and Save Our Strays stepped up, with the help of one of our rescue partners, with a medical foster.  We picked Helen up the following Monday.

She was immediately seen by one of our vets, and was continued on pain medications, antibiotics, and high-quality kitten food to build her little abused body back to strength and a good weight before any surgical repair could take place.  Ten days later, the decision was made to surgically remove her tortured and completely ruptured left eye, to stop that endless cycle of pain and inflammation.  Miraculously, her right eye is intact, but clouded with an enormous ulcer and injured third eyelid.  She is now being treated with 2 different eye medications to combat that, and is responding.  How much sight she will have in that eye is still to be determined, but there is some!

We are working to have Helen fully recovered, and fully vetted for vaccines, spay and microchip.  Your donations make it possible for us to continue to be available for these special babies.
