SOUTH CAROLINA RESCUE
STATE FARM BABIES
We received a call from our Veterinary Clinic in South Carolina. A client reported 2 young kittens under a dumpster at a local State Farm office. The Kittens were shy, and ran away when approached and the entire area is setting up for a massive winter event with sleet, freezing rain and plummeting temps. Keeping in mind that a minor winter event paralyzes the South, we knew that we needed to reach out to a savvy trapper to get these kids in quickly.
Our rescue partner reached out to another local rescue group, which specializes in trap/neuter/vaccinate/release (TNVR). Within 3 hours, we got the word that not two, but three teenage kittens were successfully drop-trapped - two small shorthaired black, and one long haired brown tabby. As it turned out, the staff at State Farm has been feeding these babies (“Like a Good Neighbor, State Farm is There”), and they were accustomed to human presence as the bringers of the food. The babies weren’t totally feral, just very shy of being touched. The staff was calling them “Gertie, Gladys and Geraldine,” but it doesn’t appear that they are, in fact, all girls. At least one of the black kittens is male, so, we have our “Jake from State Farm.”
The TNVR rescue group has these babies inside safe, and warm while we pend for surgery appointments next week and has discovered that they would be easily transitioned to being loving inside companions. Save Our Strays contributed funding towards those surgeries, and both groups are actively searching for a foster to work with them. No ice, sleet, snow and 13-degree nights for these babies. Shout out to the trapping rescue for a job done amazingly, and to a very successful collaboration between the Veterinary Clinic, and three rescue groups! That’s the way it’s supposed to work.
Save Our Strays continually searches for solutions. Sometimes, those solutions are very creative. Your donations help us to help the animals that come into our circle.
