ROBBIN’S NEST October - 2025

Hello again.

I would like to begin by wishing all of our friends, and members a HAPPY COLUMBUS DAY, and a easy fast.  It’s the month of October, and the cooler weather will be here before long.  I know that I have said this before, but please remember that now is also the time to start setting up your shelters for the strays, and prepare for the cooler months ahead.  We are also celebrating Halloween this month, so please remember to keep an eye out for the strays in your area, and your own pets as well.  Watch out for black cats especially, as they are targeted this time of year.  As I always say, “we must remember that we are their guardians.”

On another note, I would like to tell you about more of the rescues that we have been involved in lately.

MOMMA & HER 3 WK OLD KITTENS –

At one of my spots, I saw a momma cat, who looked like she was nursing.  We also saw 3 young kittens, which we assumed were hers.  The were all black, as was the momma.  We managed to get the momma cat first, and 3 of her kittens.  Then we realized that there was a fourth kitten hiding out in a hole.  We had to squeeze through a fence to try to get this last kitten, but when she saw us, she went deeper into the hole.  We stayed there most of the night, but were unable to get her.  Hours later, we went back, and were still unsuccessful.  It took two days to finally get her.  Since she was hungry, she finally came out and we grabbed her.  We put her with the momma, and the kittens, and took them all to one of our veterinarians to be checked, and the momma was given shots, etc.  When the kittens were of age, they too were given shots.  They are being fostered by a rescuer friend of mine, and being socialized.  Meanwhile, they are safe, and will eventually go up for adoption.  Because the momma is feral, she was put back at my spot, after she was spay and had healed, and was ready.  She will be safe there.

TEX –

Tex, a 4-month-old male Tuxedo cat, was found in an area near one of my feeding spots.  We set up a trap, and he went right in.  Another rescuer friend of mine fostered him, and he was fine the first week, but then all of a sudden he began throwing up a lot, and acting lethargic.  He also wasn’t eating.  I rushed him to one of our veterinarians.  They took x-rays to determine what was going on, and they found that something had wrapped itself around his intestines.  The cat was dying, and needed emergency surgery.  Exploratory surgery was done, and they found a lot of scar tissue, which was causing the problem.  They removed it, and the cat was hospitalized for six days.  The doctors weren’t sure at first, if he would survive.  The sixth day I received a call from the doctor saying that he was better, and ready to go home for post operative care.  Tex is still under post operative care, but is doing fine now and is healing and seems to be going in the right direction.  I will keep you updated on his progress.  So far, so good.

ONYX –

I was out feeding at one of my spots, when a man approached me saying that he had a cat of his own, and that someone gave him a little kitten that his wife doesn’t want.  The wife wanted to put it out in the street, but he wanted to find a home for it instead.  I took the kitten.  Prior to this, I had spoken to the concierge of a building nearby, and he said that he wanted a kitten.  I held the kitten for a couple of days, and meanwhile checked the situation with this man.  I found out that he lived in the Bronx.  I was willing to give him the kitten, but since I could not get to that area myself, he had his daughter come to get the cat after work.  They made an appointment with their veterinarian to have the kitten checked.  It turned to be a wonderful situation for the cat.  He is loved, and is in a good home now.  When Onyx is of age, he will be neutered.
